Bullet Penetration Values
Each weapon (and the strafing run) uses certain type of ammunition that has a "PenetrationPower" value.

Here are the penetration power values for each weapon and the P-47 strafing run, from highest to lowest:
Bullet Penetration and Distance
Each bullet also loses penetration power with distance. For example, when firing at a wall 1 meter away with a weapon, the fired bullet will have more penetration power than if you were firing at a wall 100 meters away with the same weapon. The amount of penetration power the bullet loses per distance traveled varies for each round.

The following image is the same chart along with the "Penetration Drop Off" value, which is what I'll call the amount of penetration power lost per inch of distance traveled.

For example, the value "2" would mean the bullet loses 2 penetration power for each inch it travels until hitting something. "0.4" would mean the bullet only loses 0.4 penetration power for each inch it travels until hitting something.

From this chart you can see that the Ithaca (2, highest value) will easily lose lots of its penetration power when firing from a distance, while the M1911 and MP40 (0.00813516896, lowest values) will retain their penetration power much more when firing from a distance.
Bullet Penetration Minimum Values
Each weapon also has a minimum penetration value. This means its penetration power will go no lower than this value, even when firing from many meters away.

Here is the same chart with the minimum penetration values added:

Bullet Penetration Mechanics
Every wall, object, and structure has a required minimum penetration power value. Any round fired that has a lower penetration power value than it will not go through. For example, a 200 penetration power MP40 won't be able to penetrate a 1000 penetration power required wall.

When shooting through something, the required penetration value of that structure is subtracted from the penetration power of the bullet. For example, firing a 1500 penetration round into a 500 penetration power required wall will leave you with a 1000 penetration power bullet, which can then potentially penetrate another structure and so on.
Required Penetration Power for Common Structures and Objects
Here are some approximate values for the penetration power required for some common structures and objects when firing straight on at point blank:

not finished, will add more maybe

Wood Crate - 600
Sandbag - 790
Wood floor/Ceiling - 240

good point. Thats actually hilarious because a long time ago I noticed that the mp5 AP/HP values in source were based on the wrong ammo type as well. Good find. Deleted my older comment to not mislead people

hehehe. As a sidenote, there a couple wallbangable spots that allow you to kill player's through wall. You can even plant TNT and the explosion willl penetrate through walls, floor and Celing. Also apply to Artillary strike. :steammocking:

yeah or do walls that are differently spaced, maybe in increments of 16u

Cool, now I don't need to make this ;)
I would add some screens of the visualized effect. If you use "sv_showimpact 1", and shoot some guns through a house, it'll give some quick impression along with the numbers.
