Introduction

I've been head over heels in love with this game for years, so here's my attempt at putting together all the information you might want to have while playing the game, in order to obtain the "Top Dog" achievement.

Achieving 100% completion is not difficult and you can do it even in a single playthrough if you're patient and grind some money. Some of the information you'll find here will be my own, some will come from external sources which I'll mention in the final notes.

However, this won't contain any precise lemme-take-your-hand walkthrough. We decided to make this guide more achievement-oriented and less walkthrough-y, because choices had to be made in project phase. I might actually write another version with a detailed walkthrough in the future, when I have time!
So... what should you do first?
Since we decided to make this guide more achievement-oriented than an actual walkthrough, you'll find that figuring out what you should do first can become a chore due to this guide's fundamental structure.

Keep in mind that story achievements you'll be able to earn by simply proceeding through the main plot. Optional achievements are achievements that you're very likely to earn naturally during your playthrough, again, due to their nature. Getting a Cherry Tree rank for the "Lupine and Divine" achievement? You're extremely likely to get them right on your first or second fight in the Cave of Nagi.

The only tricky one might be "No Furball on the Menu". Failing to escape the Water Dragon's jaws for the first time will prevent you from earning the achievement on that playthrough. If you miss this one, you'll either have to load a previous save if you have it or just try again in the next playthrough, but worry not: it's pretty easy to get. All you have to do is hurry up. Like, really hurry up. I recommend swimming directly towards the beach where the Animal Lover is, using Waterlily in combination with Galestorm to gain speed. When the Water Dragon's music stops, you're safe and you can swim back to shore. You'll unlock the achievement as soon as you touch the ground.

What about the rest? Well, the Animal Tome, the Fishing Tome, the Stray Beads' log, the Treasure Tome, the Travel Guides and the Technique Scrolls can all be completed anytime, really. I actually recommend that you wait 'til the final section of the game, just before boarding the Ark of Yamato, aka the point of no return.

There are some things, however, that you'll have to keep in mind, and that is: they're all linked. While working for your Fishing Tome you'll get a certain Travel Guide and to get all Stray Beads you'll need to complete pesky side quests (that might unlock achievements, like "Dog Gone Fast") or visit places you wouldn't normally visit and while doing so you're likely to find Travel Guides or animals. So, keep that in mind.

"Out of the Gate Swinging" can also be completed right before the game's ending, along with "Who Let the Dogs Out".

However, you can miss the "From Imps to Demons" achievement, as it requires additional bosses as well as certain enemies you can only find in areas you can't visit again or inside the Devil Gate Trials. I recommend checking that section of the guide and try to keep in mind its content, as it will help you avoid a double playthrough.

While playing, something you'd really need to do is stacking up Demon Fangs to avoid needless grinding later in the game. Check the "Barking Up the Cherry Tree" section for additional information on how to earn Demon Fangs.

Dog Eat Dog
Beat Hayabusa's turnip-digging record.

Just speak with Mushi a couple of times after turning Kamiki back to normal.

Eat my Flower Trail
Win the races against Ida and Hayate.

You'll need to defeat Ninetails before you can run every race. The messengers in Shinshu Fields and Ryoshima Coast will ask you to race three times each. From Ida you'll earn the GImmick Gear, that will give you access to Thunderbolt as well as the Travel Guide "Thunderstorm Tech". From Hayate, you'll earn Stray Bead #45.

Dog Gone Fast
Win the race against Kai.

After defeating the twin owls, go back to Yoshpet's entrance. Speak with Kai and the race will begin. By winning, you'll also obtain Stray Bead #90.

Sniff 'Em Out
Defeat all monsters on the Wanted Lists.

There are [strikethrough]three[/strikethrough] four lists you'll need to collect. The first is in Shinshu Field and it's also the easiest one, just speak with the priest beside the access to the Moon Cave. You can find the second in Kusa Village, after learning Galestorm. Visit the inn and upstairs you'll find Haruka. The third list you can find in Sei'an City, Commoner's Quarter. You'll need to speak with the burly samurai hanging out in front of the access to the Aristocratic Quarter. He won't give you his list unless you visit him while he's getting drunk in the nearby restaurant, at night. The fourth one is in Kamui: before accessing Wep'keer, visit the hut surrounded by signs.

Who Let the Dogs Out?
Defeat the Kusa 5.

After dealing with Ninetails, go back to the Gale Shrine. In the room where you found the Exorcism Arrow, you'll find Princess Fuse with her Canine Warriors. Beware though, it's gonna be a tough fight: you're gonna have to deal with all dogs, not just five of them. Each dog is far stronger than before, especially Tei, who'll be the last one. Required for the "From Imps to Demons" achievement.

Diggin' It
Complete five digging minigames.

Three are plot-related, but two of them are optional.

The first optional digging minigame can be found in Taka Pass, but can only be played after learning Galestorm. Near the entrance to the City Checkpoint, on the right side, you'll find a man holding a pendulum near a leaf pile, Bingo. Scatter away the leaves with Galestorm and the game will begin.

By winning this minigame, you'll earn Stray Bead #23.

The second optional digging minigame can be found in the Dragon Palace. After gaining access to the Water Dragon's garden, leave the throne room. There are two corridors: one leading to the Dragon's garden, the other leading to where you want to go. You'll be able to recognize which door leads where thanks to their design. You'll find a group of dancers around a dried up pool, speak with the big one.

You'll need the technique "Digging Champ" for this. Just dig the dried-up pool and the minigame will begin.

Be aware though that this is the last optional digging minigame, thus it's slightly different from the rest. Instead of digging your way down, first you'll need to dig your way up to get where the dancer is, then go back down with her.

By completing this minigame, you'll earn one of Watersprout's additional brush techniques, Whirpool, together with the Travel Guide "Watersprout Tech 1". This will allow you to use the Mermaid Springs without purchasing Mermaid Coins: drawing a whirpool on them will be enough to activate the passage.
Out of the Gate Swinging
Out of the Gate Swinging
Defeat all enemies at all three Devil Gate trial caves.

This can be a tough one on your first playthrough. There are three Devil Gate trial caves: the first one located in Ryoshima Coast, the second in one of the islands in North Ryoshima Coast and the last one in Kamui. Before accessing to the trials, you'll need to learn Digging Champ.

The first time you access to them, you'll find Bandit Spiders minibosses that you need to fight to complete your Bestiary. They're just like the Spider Queen and easy to deal with. Killing them grants a Sun Fragment. After fighting all forced fights in the area, by visiting the caves again you'll find a Devil Gate.

The trials consist of 10 consecutive Devil Gates. If you leave the cave, keep in mind that you'll have to start over. The enemies inside are considerably more powerful than their normal counterparts, so you're likely going to have a hard time if you don't stack up on useful items, particularly for Kamui's Devil Gate trial.

If you succeed, you'll earn Stray Beads #44, #65 and #79. I recommend waiting 'til just before boarding the Ark of Yamato. Stack up on Holy Bones, Vengeance Slips and Exorcism Slips as well as defense and offense Soul Sake. Each trial can be repeated, making it an excellent spot to farm Yen as long as you can keep up with your foes.

Here's a list of the enemies you'll encounter for each trial.

From Imps to Demons
Completing the Bestiary is quite easy, as long as you remember a few things. Not all enemies can be encountered during the natural course of the story if you avoid all Demon Scrolls. You also need to defeat the Kusa 5 for the "Who Let the Dogs Out" achievement.

Doing so will add the following entries that you'd otherwise be missing:

  • Canine Warrior Rei

  • Canine Warrior Shin

  • Canine Warrior Chi

  • Canine Warrior Ko

While you encounter all of them while progressing in the Kusa Village's storyline, their bestiary entry won't appear until you fight and defeat them.

Other missable enemies are:
  • Fire Doom Mirror, that you can find in the Emperor's room, in one of the scrolls just below the Platform Spiders.

  • Clay Flyer. It can be found in Shinshu Field 100 years in the past, but you'll have to sift through the Demon Scrolls in the area until you find it.

  • Umbrella Namahage in Kamui. Either fight in the Devil Gate trial or just look for it in the scrolls.

Fighting the Bandit Spiders (see "Out of the Gate Swinging") is also required.
All Creatures Great and Small

In the world you’ll be able to find scattered groups of animals you can feed to earn some Praise. To complete the Animal Tome you don’t need to find every single of them, just feeding one group for each type is enough.

Sparrow
These tiny birds eat seeds in an adorable manner.

Locations: Kamiki Village, Shinshu Field, Agata Forest, Taka Pass, Kusa Village, Sasa Sanctuary

Chicken
These domesticated fowl are known to be quite fond of seeds.

Locations: Kamiki Village, Kusa Village

Dog
These meat-loving animals show great loyalty and affection.

Locations: Kamiki Village, Agata Forest, Taka Pass, Kusa Village, Sasa Sancutary, Ryoshima Coast, North Ryoshima Coast, Spirit Gate

Hare
These herb-eating rodents are known for their long ears.

Locations: Kamiki Village, Shinshu Field, Agata Forest, Sasa Sanctuary, Ryoshima Coast, North Ryoshima Coast, Kamui, Wep'keer, Ponc'tan (outside)

Boar
These cowardly animals charge when frightened. They enjoy seeds.

Locations: Hana Valley, Shinshu Field, Dragon Palace, Ponc'tan (outside)

Boar piglet
These seed-eating babies can be identified by their stripes.

Locations: Hana Valley, Shinshu Field, Taka Pass, City Checkpoint, Ryoshima Coast, Dragon Palace, Ponc'tan (outside)

Monkey
These mischievous creatures travel in groups and eat almost anything.

Locations: Hana Valley, Agata Forest, Taka Pass, Kusa Village, Ryoshima Coast, Ezofuji

Pig
These domesticated boars have cute noses and enjoy eating seeds.

Locations: Shinshu Field, Kusa Village, Ryoshima Coast, North Ryoshima Coast

Deer
These graceful animals eat herbs. Males have antlers; females don't.

These meat-eating creatures are known for their sly nature.

Raccoon
These adorable creatures enjoy a diet of meat and fish.

Horse
These swift creatures run like the wind and eat herbs.

Locations: Shinshu Field, Taka Pass, City Checkpoint, Ryoshima Coast

Tiger
These beautiful fanged and clawed creatures subsist on meat.

Locations: Taka Pass, Sasa Sanctuary, North Ryoshima Coast

Mouse
These robust little rodents are full of energy and eat anything.

Locations: Sasa Sanctuary, Gale Shrine, Dragon Palace

Cat
These cute felines are known for their cry and their love of fish.

Locations: Ryoshima Coast, North Ryoshima Coast, Catcall Tower

Cow
These carefree bovines are stronger than they look. They adore herbs.

Locations: Ryoshima Coast, North Ryoshima Coast

Bear
These immensely powerful giants love nothing more than eating fish.

Locations: Kamui, Wep'keer, Ezofuji

Sheep
These herb-eating scamps boast a coat as soft as the clouds.

Locations: Kamui, Wep'keer

Crane
These water-dwelling, long-necked birds subsist mainly on fish.

Locations: Kamui, Wep'keer

Interacting with the animals might be fun. Biting will let you carry certain small animals such as hares and sparrows and annoy the bigger ones, while tackling will startle them. I'm not responsible of any injuries should you try tackling a tiger.
No More Fish in the Sea 1/2
Completing the Fish Tome is not really difficult, but it can be rng-dependant at times.

There are four fishing spots in the game, two of which are required to progress the storyline, namely the Agata Forest and Sei'an City fishing spots. At some point of the storyline you will no longer be able to fish in Agata Forest, but the fish there can be caught in other spots as well. So stopping by to fish with Kokari is by no means required to complete this achievement.

The fishing spots are:

  • Agata Forest: needed to progress the main quest.

  • Sei'an City: also needed to progress the main quest. Requires the purchase of the Blinding Snow fishing rod. Afterwards, you'll find Benkei in a corner of the Aristocratic Quarter.

  • North Ryoshima Coast: optional. You'll need to purchase the Marlin Rod and of course have access to Orca. On one of the islands, the one with the dock, you'll find a fisherman. He'll tell you that he needs to fish a Marlin for the owner of a nearby restaurant. This also gives access to the additional brush technique Whirlwind and the Travel Guide "Galestorm Tips" (see "Have Guides Will Travel" for additional information).

  • Kamui: optional. Near the dojo, you can find Kokari fishing with Ume.

The day-night cycle influences what you'll catch. There are fishes you can catch only during by daytime or only during nighttime. The day/night cycle doesn't pause during the fishing minigame, so you should pay attention to light levels. As KBKarma pointed out, though, you can use both Sunrise and Crescent while you're fishing, so there's no need to quit the minigame to change into day or night! Be patient, pay attention to your energy levels and try not to waste it on smaller fish, and soon enough you'll be able to catch Marlins.

Here's a list of the fish you need to catch, divided by location. Some fishes can be caught in multiple locations.

For those who value craftsmanship as much as functionality.

Silver pocket watch

This ritzy little number displays its own enhanced version of time.

Don't worry if you don't find all of them early in the game. You'll need to get to the final section of the game before finding the last three.
Give a Dog All the Bones 2/3
Zodiac Statues

Rat Statue
3300¥
One of the 13 zodiac treasures. It is posed whimsically.
Obtainable after learning Cherry Bomb. In fact, it's behind the wall you need to break for Cherry Bomb's tutorial.

Bull Statue
3400¥
One of the 13 zodiac treasures. It looks quite ferocious.
Obtainable after learning Digging Champ. You need to dig the hard ground in front of the entrance to the Tsuta Ruins, in Agata Forest.

Tiger Statue
3500¥
One of the 13 zodiac treasures. It looks brave and bold.
Obtainable after learning Vine. In Taka Pass, after blooming the Guardian Sapling, go back towards the cave. Don't jump down the bridge, even if it's tempting! Looking above you, you'll be able to see a trail of blossoms. Use Vine to jump from blossom to blossom and eventually you'll get to a platform with 3 clovers. Look around and you'll find more blossoms facing towards Agata Forest, use Vine and eventually you'll get to a chest placed on top of a rock.

Rabbit Statue
3600¥
One of the 13 zodiac treasures. Its expression is quite alert.
Obtainable in Gale Shrine. When you enter in the elevator, be careful not to jump on it and use Cherry Bomb to send it up. In the small cavern below you'll find some rats, a clover and chests. One of them contains the treasure you want, and another contains Stray Bead #33.

Dragon Statue
3700¥
One of the 13 zodiac treasures. It boasts a regal appearance.
This one is a bit of a pain. You'll need to lower the City Checkpoint's bridge first. Then, facing left, you'll see a Konohana blossom. Using Vine to jump from flower to flower, but be careful, all the Konohana Blossoms (except maybe one) are facing downwards, and you might find yourself having to climb back up and redo everything from scratch if you fall down.

Snake Statue
3800¥
One of the 13 zodiac treasures. It is unnervingly realistic.
Can be found in Ryoshima Coast. You'll need to clear the area first, then jump in the ocean, towards the two rocks linked by a white rope. Once you swim there, you'll find a few chests, the central one contains the Snake Statue. Of course, this is easier later in the game if you equip the Water Tablet.

Horse Statue
3900¥
One of the 13 zodiac treasures. There is purity in its design.
After clearing Sei-an City, in the Commoners' Quarters you need to take the road to the right. Don't cross the bridge, at the end of the path you'll see a dried up pool. Use Watersprout to fill it, then use it again to create a columb of water. This will allow you to go up, where you'll find a mysterious floating building. Don't enter it, run around it. In the back you'll find the chest with the Horse Statue.

Sheep Statue
4000¥
One of the 13 zodiac treasures. Quite ordinary in its depiction.
After learning Veil Mist, go to Sei-an's Aristocratic Quarters and pass the guards in front of Himiko's palace using Veil Mist. Turn right and you'll see a chest buried in the sand.

Monkey Statue
4100¥
One of the 13 zodiac treasures. Its design is rather adorable.
In the Sunken Ship, in the section with the giant, gross green hands tryin' to smack you. Jump on the barrel, then double jump on the ledge above to retrieve the Monkey Statue.

Rooster Statue
4200¥
One of the 13 zodiac treasures. Its humorous look elicits smiles.
Obtainable right after defeating Blight. Just behind the Emperor and beyond the curtains you can see the chest cointaining this statue.

Dog Statue
4300¥
One of the 13 zodiac treasures. It looks very loyal and obedient.
Obtainable after learning Catwalk. In North Ryoshima coast, to progress the main story you'll have to climb up to Watcher's Cape by using Catwalk. There you'll also find the chest you need.

Boar Statue
4400¥
One of the 13 zodiac treasures. It appears to be hungry.
North Ryoshima Coast, near the pool filled with golden water and in an hidden underground cave.

Cat Statue
4500¥
One of the 13 zodiac treasures. Its design evokes loneliness.
You can find it while climbing up on Catcall Tower. It's on one of the platforms around it, near the top.

Wawku Shrine, in the passage with the flaming wheels, in the chest on one of the platforms.

If you enjoy exploring and looking for treasures on your own, you’ll likely won’t need any of this information, except maybe the Snake Statue’s location. Of course, finding treasure is much easier when it’s night, thus learning Crescent will help you a great deal.

Treasure, in Okami, has only one purpose: being sold. Once you get a new item, its entry will become available in the Treasure Tome, so no need to keep what you find. Accumulating Yen will help you for other two achievements: “Teach an Old Dog New Tricks” and “Barking Up the Cherry Tree”.
Teach an Old Dog New Tricks
During your travels, you'll come across the dojos. Inside you'll always find this adorable, sweet old man called Onigiri-sensei...

... except that by rotating his head he's suddenly not sweet at all.

You are required to visit the dojo in Shinshu Field to progress the story, and then you are required to learn a certain technique to access the Sunken Ship in Ryoshima Coast. But you. You are a Top Dog. You will learn them all. No matter the cost.

And I'm not gonna lie, it's gonna cost you a lot of ¥.

Here's a list of the techniques you need to learn, along with the place and the cost.

Shinshu Field

Fleetfoot
10000¥
Allows you to dodge by pressing Shift.

4 Winds
5000¥
Adds a fourth hit to the reflector combo.

Spirit Storm
7000¥
Increases the rosaries' attack rate.

Ryoshima Coast

Golden Fury
100000¥
Insult your foes to gain Demon Fangs.

Holy Eagle
20000¥
Double jump.

Digging Champ
30000¥
Allows you to dig the rocky ground. As you've probably noticed by checking the other sections of this guide, this is a very precious skill.

Wailing Mirror

40000¥
By equipping reflectors as both primary and secondary weapon, your attack power is increased.

5 Winds
20000¥
Adds a fifth hit to your reflector combo. Requires 4 Winds.

Spirit Armageddon
30000¥
Further increases your rosaries' attack rate. Requires Spirit Storm.

3 Shears
40000¥
Adds a third hit to your glaives' combo.

Brown Rage
2000000¥ (yes this is the right amount of zeros)
Add even more insult to your foes to gain Demon Fangs. Requires Golden Fury.

Kamui

Hardhead
10000¥
Allows you to break objects that you couldn't before, by tackling them.

Counter Dodge
30000¥
Adds damage to Fleetfoot and also requires it.

Holy Falcon
30000¥
Adds damage to Holy Eagle and also requires it.

Bead Strings
50000¥
Equip rosaries as both primary and secondary weapons to increase attack power.

Sword Dance
60000¥
Equip glaives as both primary and secondary weapons to increase attack power.

4 Shears
50000¥
Adds a fourth hit to the glaives' combo. Requires 3 Shears.

Now, I really hate math, but you can see that this is really, really, a lot of ¥. The total amount of ¥ you need for this achievement should amount to 2532000¥ and feel free to correct me if my math is an opinion (it could be).

During your travels you'll probably earn more than that... but you also need to spend it. On useful items, on quest items, on Divine Springs offerings. You need to work for it.

A good way to farm ¥ in your endgame, though, is replaying the last Devil Gate Trial in Kamui. This is no easy feat, but if you're in NG+ and equipped with a shiny String of Beads, it'll become easier and you'll likely grind up all the money you need. However, Okami is not really a grinding game, so don't worry: no one's expecting you to pass entire days around the same spots desperately looking for ¥.

You should also note that you can still find some of Ryoshima Coast's techniques in Kamui's one as well. So no need to go back all the way to spend that sweet 2000000¥ for Brown Rage.
Have Guides Will Travel
You won't get all Travel Guides during the natural course of the storyline: for some, you'll have to work for, for others you'll have to explore a bit.

They all contain useful information, either about in-game tips or lore.

  • Travel Tips
Automatically obtained upon starting the game.

  • Greensprout Tips
Hana Valley. After learning Bloom, bloom the cursed patch of ground just before the bridge as you're leaving.

  • Digging Tips
Hana Valley. Fight the Imps having a feast again, on the island there'll be the chest containing this guide.

  • Fleeing Battle
Appears in front of Shinshu Field's Guardian Sapling after you restore it.

  • Feeding Tips
Located beside the entrance to Agata Forest, in Shinshu Field. Also near a group of boars and boar piglets.

  • Legend of Orochi
Right in front of Tama's house.

  • Enhancing Weapons
In front of Tsuta Ruins' entrance.

  • Battle Tips
Beside Kiba, the Demon Fang merchant.

  • Enhancing Divinity
Tsuta Ruins, the chest opposite to the origin mirror, as soon as you enter.

  • Godhood Tips
Inner Tsuta Ruins, on the steps leading to the Spider Queen's room.

  • Ink Bullet Tips
Agata Forest, after crossing the river towards Taka Pass.

  • Brush Tips
Galestorm Shrine, on the edge of the western path when you rotate the windmill platforms.

  • Mother Tree
Taka Pass. On the left of the bridge there's a staircase and below it you'll find this travel guide.

  • Land of the Gods
The chest on the right in Rao's room.

  • Celestial Envoy
Ryoshima Coast, inside the Sunken Ship. It's among the chests you find in the first section.

  • Veil of Mist Tech
Requires buying the Fog Pot from the Emperor at the price of 80 Demon Fangs. This will give you access to Warp, an additional Brush technique that will allow you to use Kasugami's powers to fast travel through mirrors.

  • Holy Artifacts
In the Queen's palace, right before the lava room.

  • Northen Land
In one of the branching sides of the Queen's palace.

  • Inferno Tech
Requires learning Fireburst from Sei'an City's chef. In turn, this will require obtaining the Golden Mushroom by returning the Golden Teapot to the Teahouse Owner in Taka Pass. To do so you'll have to "play tag" with the Moles, and succeed.

  • Mark of Kabegami
    Catcall Tower, near the base.

  • Galestorm Tech
Requires learning Whirlwind. To do so, you'll need to obtain a Marlin Rod and have access to Orca, so you can travel to one of the islands in North Ryoshima Coast, the one with the dock. Talk with the fisherman and together you'll fish a Marlin. Take the fish back to Umi.

  • Power Slash 2
Requires upgrading Power Slash into Power Slash 2. In one of the islands, you'll find an hidden underground spring where you can offer Yen. Selecting the most expensive option 3 times will make Tachigami appear.

  • Cherry Bomb 2
Similar to Power Slash 2. Again, you'll find an hidden underground spring, and offering the most money you can 3 times will make Bakugami appear.

  • Watersprout Tech 1
Appears after learning Whirpool in the Dragon Palace. I recommend you check the Diggin' It achievement.

  • Watersprout Tech 2
Appears after learning Deluge. After defeating Ninetails, go back to the Queen's Palace. Behind it, you'll find Himiko's attendant and a pool. Do as she asks and Nuregami will appear.

  • Thunderstorm Tech
Appears after learning Thunderbolt. To do so you'll need to beat Hayate in Shinshu Field in all 3 races, after defeating Ninetails. This will earn you the Gimmick Gear. Head to Sei'an City aristocratic quarters and on the left you'll see a tall, odd tower. Climb it with Catwalk and talk with Gen.

  • Another Civilization
Ezofuji, right beside the save mirror next to the altar.

  • Cherry Bomb 3
Like Cherry Bomb 2. The spring is in Kamui, beside the Guardian Sapling. You'll need Vine to jump up the platform and Cherry Bomb 2 to open up the passage.

  • Tribe of the Moon
Kamui. On the west side of the map there's a cave. You'll recognize it: the music will change as you enter and you'll see a fair amount of bats hanging from the ceiling. Explore it.

  • Power Slash 3
Like Power Slash 2. In Ezofuji, climb up towards the Wawku Shrine's entrance, but keep an eye out for your surroundings. When you see a platform with a rock you can break with Power Slash 2, drop down to it.
Leave no Chest Unopened - #1 to #50
This. This is the one achievement that might have you backtracking all the way to the Cave of Nagi (the starting area), unless you're a very attentive player who really, really enjoys exploring and learning all the secrets of the game.

Obtaining all 100 Stray Beads is worth it, though: you'll earn the String of Beads, an Holy Artifact that grants you unlimited life, unlimited ink and, on top of all of this, multiplies your attack power by 10. Overpowered much? This'll make getting through the main story and all of the additional quests seem like a joke. Even the Devil Gate Trials become easy thanks to this: after all, you can never get damaged and never run out of ink. Ever.

But let's get down to the nitty-gritty. Each Stray Bead is numbered, so, while you'll probably need to backtrack a bit, it's easy backtracking.

Cave of Nagi

#1
In the second portion of the Cave of Nagi, southeast of the bridge and beyond the river. Jump or swim there.

Kamiki Village

#2
In a chest under the platform where you learn Sunrise. Getting there is a bit tricky as you'll need to try and get the double jump on a vertical surface while facing the right direction. It might be easier after you learn double jump. You can also use Power Slash on the chest to open it (Thank you Kanade for the tip!), and if you're backtracking and have already learned Galestorm, you can use wind to push the item wherever you like.

#3
Buried on one of the island near Susano's house. You need Waterlily to get far enough without drowning, and I also recommend either learning Crescent first or just wait for nighttime to spot it more easily.

#4
On top of the waterfall, in a chest. You need Vine to get there.

Shinshu Field

#5

Near the base of the ramp going towards the Moon Cave, buried on the ledge with two trees.

#6
Buried behind the Dojo.

#7
Buried around bushes on a ledge on the east side of the river, across from the Guardian Sapling.

#8
Buried in a corner behind the Nameless man's klin.

#9
Given by Tama after showing him Cherry Bomb 2 and 3.

#10
Given by the Nameless Man after offering all 5 of his vases to the Guardian Statues around Shinshu Field. The final vase is available after taking Lika to Wawku Shrine.

Hana Valley

#11
Buried near the first tree on the left after passing the tunnel, after defeating the Imps feasting by the campfire.

Agata Forest

#12
In the middle chest inside Madame Fawn's house.

#13
Buried between Karude's house. Karude's the hunter, by the way.

#14
Buried on the ledge near the cracked wall left of the entrance to Tsuta Ruins.

#15
Sitting by itself on a branch. Use Vine.

#16

In a chest on top of the tree near the spring. Use Vine and be prepared for a bath!

#17
In the middle chest outside Madame Fawn's house. You need Watersprout to be able to open it.

Tsuta Ruins

#18

On the platform after the second tree trunk ramp, in the area where you find the Holy Arrow. Bomb the wall and don't let the lack of a classic Cherry Bomb crack fool you. Bloom the bud.

#19
Behind the cracked wall behind the poisoned waterfall. Bloom the bud.

#20
In the long hall where the stone orb was, look for a Konohana Blossom. Use Vine, then Bloom the bud.

Taka Pass

#21
In the area where you fight Waka, look for some bubbles in the pond on the right. Use Power Slash.

#22

Buried behind the rock just behind Mr. and Mrs. Cutter's house.

#23
Buried near Bingo, the treasure hunter.

#24
Buried under a pile of leaves near the Mermaid Spring. Requires Galestorm.

#25

In the burning chest in the tunnel in the upper side of the map. And by upper, I mean height-wise. Use Galestorm to take out the pesky fires.

#26
Near Bingo, under the hard-digging spot, middle chest. Requires Digging Champ.

Kusa Village

#27
Buried by the bridge left of Princess Fuse.

#28
Buriied inside Mr. Bamboo's house.

#29
In a chest on the upper rafters. You need to use Vine to get on the platform and then use Galestorm on the banners to jump on them. Includes a Solar Fragment.

Sasa Sanctuary

#30
Buried next to the bamboo fountain right at the entrance.

#31
Inside the first room on the left, upstairs. Paint a dot for the mask's missing eye.

#32
Buried in a chest in a small grove at the back of the Bamboo Forest.

Gale Shrine

#33

Instead of getting on the elevator, draw a Cherry Bomb and allow it to leave without you. You'll also find the Rabbit Statue.

#34
Burning chest on the second floor. Requires Galestorm.

#35
Obtained by defeating the Kusa 5. See "Who Let the Dogs Out?".

City Checkpoint

#36

Buried in the far end of the riverbank, past the waterfall. To get there don't cross the bridge, but use the stairs on the left.

#37

Burning chest near the waterfall.

#38
Purify all cursed areas past the bridge, after learning Inferno.

#39

On top of a stone pillar near the limit of the river, going downstream. Requires Vine and it's easier when the bridge is down, although you can get to the first blossom right from the start.

#40
Buried on a small island, upstream. You need the Water Tablet, because you'll find that you're unable to use Water Lily since the lilypads will follow the current. You can purchase the Water Tablet from the Emperor after defeating Ninetails in exchange of 100 Demon Fangs.

Ryoshima Coast

#41

In a chest on top of the Sunken Ship. Swim there.

#42

Clear the Devil gate near Sei'an City's entrance. One of the rabbit is black and white, grab him and take him to the Animal Lover on the beach.

#43

Buried under the hard rock near the dojo. Requires Digging Champ.

#44
Complete the first Devil Gate Trial. You can find it near some cows behind Ankoku Temple, going towards the Guardian Sapling. For additional information check "Out of the Gate Swinging".

#45

Defeat Hayate three times in the racing minigame. For additional info, check "Eat My Flower Trail".

Sei'an City (Commoners' Quarter)

#46

In a chest in the southwest section of the canal.

#47

Inside Mr. Flower's house.

#48
Buy Charcoal from the Tool Dealer's shop. Give it to a girl in the east part of town, the one who's crouching down drawing. Speak to her and pay attention to the pattern in her thought bubble. Go to the Kimono Shop and reproduce the drawing. Mr. Chic will say "That pattern almost seems as it could make something happen" when you get it right. Go back to the girl to get Praise and another design. Draw her patterns five times to get the Stray Bead.

#49

Complete the four racing minigames against Hayao and proceed to return the stolen items to their owners. To return the Tao Mask, fill the dry pond in the southeast to gain access to Waka's base. You can only succeed at all races after learning Thunderstorm and you need to light up all the three large beacons to access the races at all.

#50
Speak to Camille and Camelia in Kamiki Village. Check the In-Depth section for further information.
Leave no Chest Unopened - #51 to #100
Sei'an City (Aristocratic Quarter)

#51
Buried next to the small bridge.

#52
Defeat Komuso's monsters within 30 seconds, each time. While the third and final challenge takes place here in Sei'an, the first one is in Kamiki (less than 12 seconds to win) and the second is in Kusa Village (less than 25 seconds to win). He's always quite easy to find, but I recommend speaking to him as you progress through the story to avoid needless backtracking.

#53
In a submerged chest on the eastern side of the giant bridge. You need to jump down from the bridge and either swim or walk there if you have the Water Tablet.

#54
At the dead end outside of Himiko's Palace, on the left.

#55
Behind the elevator inside Himiko's Palace.

#56
Inside the electrical box in Gen's tower. I recommend checking "Eat my Flower Trail" and "Have Guides Will Travel".

#58
In the room where the Lucky Mallet is.

Imperial Palace

#59
Buried in the garden, in front of the Emperor.

North Ryoshima Coast

#60
Buried on the left of the broken stairs near Watcher's Cape.

#61
Buried near the cows, where Yoichi is.

#62
Buried on the island on the far left, with the long dock, where the fisherman can be found.

#63

Inside the middle chest in the Divine Spring where Yoichi is. Requires Digging Champ to access the spring.

#64
In the rocky area only accessible thorugh Mist Warp. To learn it, buy a Fog Pot from the Emperor in exchange of 80 Demon Fangs.

#65
Clear the second Devil Gate trial on the second island from the left.

#66
Given by Urashima by giving him the Treasure Box you can find inside the Dragon Palace. To find it, you need to bloom the Dragon's remains inside the Dragon's garden.

Catcall Tower

#67
On one of the platforms on the way up the tower.

Appears at the top of the staircase after climbing the tower a second time. And you actually need to climb it, using the Mermaid Spring to warp inside doesn't count.

#69

#71
On the top drum in the Dancers' room. Restore the third drum with Rejuvenation to access it.

Defeat Blockhead Grande inside the local Divine Spring. Enjoy!

Buried near the cranes by the lake.

#81
In an alcove with a bear right in the middle of the village.

#82
Buried near the sheep by Kai's house.

Kamui (Ezofuji)

#84
Found on the easternmost platform. Cross the lake, then use Vine.

#85
On the cliffside behind Tuskle's hut. Use Vine.

#87
In the rocky area only accessible through Mist Warp.

Yoshpet

#88
Near the end of the second section.

#89

At the end of the wrong path at the end of the third section.

#90
Given by Kai after beating her in a race. See "Dog Gone Fast".

Ponc'tan

#91

Wawku Shrine

#97
Buried under the left cannon, in the entrance hall.

#98
On an alcove on the way back from the Blizzard Machine. Freeze the scaling Flame Spider at its topmost position to get there. It'll likely require a few tries and it obviously requires Blizzard.

#99
On the outside of the elevator shaft. Freeze the Flame Spider in its middle position to reach the alcove.

Good job! The hardest part is over! Here's what the Stray Beads log will look like once you're done.

Stray Bead #100 is obtained as a reward upon completing the game for the first time.

Should you get them all in your first playthrough, you'll get a flavor text saying "All Stray Beads have been united! The String of Beads is complete!"
Side-quests (In Depth)
Due to Steam's character limit, here I decided to whip out an in-depth guide to the side quests you can do during your playthrough. Some of them are directly tied to achievements as you've probably noticed (example: "Dog Eat Dog"), others are indirectly linked to them (example: "Dog Gone Fast") and the rest are just there to grant you extra Praise should you complete them.

But let's start from the beginning.

Kamiki Village

Here you can find two sidequests. One of them is needed for the "Dog Eat Dog" achievement and the other just grants you Praise.

Mushi's challenge
Speak with Mushi a couple of times. He'll challenge you to beat his dog's digging record by digging up all 10 turnips in his mom's field. Head to the field and start digging the turnips up, but be careful: as soon as the first one is out of the ground, Mushi's mom will get mad at you and try to hit you. If you get hit, you lose the game... but don't forget that you're a god, and as such you have a variety of tools that Hayabusa clearly doesn't have. You can use Power Slash on the woman or on the bucket on her head to distract her, as well as paint a vertical line on her figure to cover her in ink and make her temporarily blind.

The last turnip will be the Oddly Shaped Turnip, grab it and take it back to Mushi to earn Praise and the sweet achievement.

Mrs. Orange's Laundry
You'll notice Mrs. Orange washing her laundry by the river, just left of the bridge while going towards Shinshu Field. She looks annoyed. Speak with her and she'll tell you that her drying pole disappeared. You can restore it with Rejuvenation, in exchange of some Praise. Afterwards, she'll tell you that the laundry always takes a long time to dry, 'cause "the sun looks so far away these days". Use Sunrise and then speak with her again, she's finally happy! You'll get some Praise, as well as the privilege of trying out her fabled Cherry Cakes should you visit Mr. and Mrs. Orange's house at night.

Camille & Camelia
Linked to Stray Bead #50. You'll find the two sisters beneath the Konohana Tree, just don't walk under the torii gate. Speak with them and Camille will prove to be exceptionally unfaithful when it comes to the gods - so, when she talks about someone hitting them, headbutt her. Afterwards they'll move to Sei'an City, in the commoners' quarter and close to Mr. Chic's kimono shop. Speak with them and when she hints that she'll only believe in the Gods if a tree sprouts in front of her, draw a dot on the ground. For the next bit, you'll need Deluge: for more info, you should check "Have Guides Will Travel". She'll say that she'll only believe in the Gods as long as it starts raining right after a tree appears: draw a dot and then make it rain with Deluge immediately after the tree sprouts. You need to be quick about it, otherwise the tree will disappear. No longer a non-believer, Camille will grant you some Praise as well as Stray Bead #50.

Shinshu Fields

There's a few sidequests here as well. Keep in mind, however, that some of them might not be accessible right from the start and most of them require you to progress pretty far in the story before you can definitely complete them. Here goes nothing!

Messenger Ida
You'll find him for the first time between the Nameless Man's kiln and the bridge leading to Tama's hut. He's exhausted, and he'll ask you for a Traveler's Charm. If you don't have it, you can go buy one from the merchant near the Guardian Sapling. Once you give it to him, he'll jump up, give you some Praise and start running.

Later in the game, as the story progresses, he'll challenge you to a race, three times. You'll know when a new race minigame becomes available because he'll have a big exclamation mark flashing above his head. The last race becomes available after learning Thunderstorm, since winning it will grant you the Gimmick Gear required to access to Thunderstorm's additional technique. More details on that in the section "Have Guides Will Travel".

The Guardian Statues
First, you need to restore the Nameless Man's kilin to access this quest. Doing so only requires beating the Devil Gate across the river from the Nameless Man's house. After this, you'll need to wait a while before the quest becomes available, I recommend visiting him after taking Lika to Wawku Shrine and beating the twin owls so you can do everything in one go.

You'll find the Nameless Man working at his kiln, with an exclamation mark above his head. If you speak with him, he'll start telling you how proud he is of the last vase he has created and thus shows it to you. Grab it and carry it with you.

Now, you might have noticed that there are a few Guardian Statues scattered across Shinshu Fields. When you examine them, Issun will say something along the lines of "they look so neglected, it's a shame". If you carry one of the Nameless Man's vases to them, a little scene will play out of the Guardian Statues becoming clean and happy with the vase beside them, containing a flower.

There are five Guardian Statues and five vases you need to obtain from the Nameless Man.

(WIP - will be for a while due to real life stuff)

Barking Up the Cherry Tree
This achievement requires you to get an S on each item in the Results screen, at the end of the game.

This can't really be gained naturally without putting any effort, so prepare to work for it.

Here's a list on what's being evaluated and what sort of score you need to get an S.

Deaths: less than 5.

Really, this one is the easiest. Resurrecting with the Astral Pouch doesn't count, drowning doesn't count, falling in acid doesn't count. To actually die you need to run out of both Solar Energy and Astral Pouches, and this'll cause the "Game Over" screen to appear. It's honestly unlikely you'll get more than 1 legitimate death and you'll probably never die anyway.

Praise Earned: more than 4500.

Restoring the world and completing sidequests will earn you a lot of Praise. Defeating Demon Scrolls and Devil Gates also earns you Praise.

Enemies Defeated: more than 550.

Again, if you go around completing sidequests, exploring a bit and catching the occasional Demon Scroll, you should easily surpass the 550 mark. Completing the Devil Gate Trials is obviously also of great help.

Demon Fangs: more than 300.

Ok, this one is probably the trickiest of them all. To have an easier life you should start earning Demon Fangs right from the beginning of the game, by using the Floral Finishers. Upon death, you'll see monsters play an animation. Hit them with a particular Brush technique and you'll earn Demon Fangs. Golden Fury and Brown Rage will also help you earn Demon Fangs, but honestly they're techniques you'll get later in the game and are also quite expensive, so I recommend Floral Finishing everything you can.

Here's a list of what technique you need to use for each monster and how many Demon Fangs it'll give you.

Another neat trick that can earn you a few Demon Fangs is enabling the original loading screen minigame from the options. This will allow you to access to two different versions of the loading screen, that'll both require you to press a button (it should be left mouse button for keyboard users and X button for controller users) to make ink pawprints. In one version, starting with a blank canvas, the more pawprints you make the more likely you'll be able to earn a Demon Fang. In the other, you're required to time your button-pressing with the smaller pawprints already appearing on screen. It's a long shot, and it'll take some practice to get used to it at all, but you can earn a few more Demon Fangs this way.

Money Gained: more than 4000000¥.

You should note that once you fill all of your Astral Pouches, food turns into ¥. Probably the best way to earn ¥ is fighting in the Devil Gate Trials, but it's not the only way: selling treasure and fish may be decent. You should note that there are two merchants who'll pay more for fish compared to everyone else: the Tool Shop Dealer in Sei'an City and the merchant in Taka Pass. However, note that the latter will only buy Agata Forest's fish at a special price, while the first will buy Agata's, Sei'an's and Ryoshima's fish at a special price. No special price for Kamui's fish!

Each item refers to the total accumulated during the whole playthrough. So don't worry about having to save up 4000000¥ before you get to the game's ending, and spend everything at your heart's content!
Easter Eggs
Just a small compilation of small secrets you may find amusing. Achievement-wise they're useless, but still fun to try!

Like, try Blooming a person. Any person. They'll get hearts around them and they'll be surrounded by flowers for a brief moment. Some will even run towards you to pet your adorable wolf head, like Kushi does when you meet her in the rice fields in Kamiki.

However, if you Bloom an Oina tribe's member, no hearts and no affection ensue. Instead they'll turn into their wolf shape. This allows you to see the wolf shape of Oinas that you normally don't see, such as Lika, Tuskle and the merchant near the frozen lake.

Other techniques may also yield interesting results. All of them are very likely to startle and confuse people, and they'll get a question mark in the thought bubble over their head.

Now. Remember Kamiki's festival after defeating Orochi? Maybe you also remember Karude, Mr. Bamboo and the Nameless Man all merrily drinking around a barrel of Thunder Brew sake. They're happy right? It's nice right??

Well you can make their night truly special by using Watersprout to link the barrel's contents to them. You'll discover that they all pass out from too much sake and feature some new, funny lines thanks to Issun.

If you get far enough from them that they disappear from your sights, then approach them again, you'll find all of them hungover and with a terrible headache. Congrats, you are officially the god of sake.

Moreover, Blizzard features an additional, semi-hidden technique that you probably won't know anything about unless you're a good boy and check your tips' scrolls regularly. By drawing an asterisk you can summon Icestorm. No additional sidequests are required, since you learn Icestorm along with Blizzard itself.

I'll add more as I discover and remember them~
Done!

You're now a Top Dog!

Hunt some more Imps, enjoy your Karmic Transformers and oneshot bosses with your String of Beads. It'll be fun!
Final notes
Of course some of the information contained in here is thanks to my previous experience on the PS2 original version, but I couldn't have done this without checking Okami's wikia and Okami Neoseeker, as well as the Playstation Trophies' FAQs.

And of course, I'd have gone crazy without my trusty Moon² going through the pain of having to select and upload and snip all the different pictures. Thanks dear <3

Of course I'm open to suggestions on what can be added or edited, so feel free to comment. Constructive criticism is well appreciated.

Sorry about the length of my previous comments, I just had a bit I wanted to say. I also didn't realize that the loading screen mini-games were mentioned after I posted. I wanted to leave one more piece of advice specifically for praise. I didn't realize that you could bloom clovers until I just tried it at the end of my switch play through. I also completely didn't register that you can bloom cursed trees. I still feel <b>really</b> dumb about that on my second play through since Issun tells you earlier in the game. Finally got Top Dog. couldn't be more grateful for this guide! :amaterasu:

One minor correction I need to say is that the Travel Guide, "Mother Tree" Is in City Checkpoint and not Taka Pass. Anyways, thank you for this guide. :issun:

One tip is to remember the floral finishers for at least some of the most common enemies and a few uncommon ones. For example, most of the Imps in Shinshu Field require slash, the guardian statues in Ryoshima mostly need cherry bomb, and the Nagahame in Kamui mostly need wind gust. There are some like the Bull Charger(Inferno) even the Dogu(Mist Veil) that I stated to see more in Kamui as I approached the end. If that Isn't enough, another tip that I discovered on my own, is that if have the loading mini games on, the mini games will seemingly give you demon fangs if you get the demon fang to appear. The mini games are either mash Cross/A, or time the press to the paw prints appearing(several times in a row per rep). I decided to check once when travelling because I think I noticed that I seemed to be getting some despite not having gotten any fangs in fights much. Also use golden fury when you can to further the grind.

This guide(along with a few others for Okami here on Steam) has helped me get a good chunk of the achievements on my first playthrough that I've been sitting on for a long time. I'm now using the guide to wrap up my switch game with all stray beads at least. I wanted to add a couple things that might be helpful.

I think that if you go for all Dojo abilities along with all purchasable weapons and the brush techniques that you have to give money to the spring, should cost 4,222,000 yen if my calculations are correct. I was so close to getting cherry tree for all rankings except praise. I was 300-ish shy of the 4500+ required. However, I had over 1200 demon fangs mostly from Kamui on when i picked it back up.

Another thing you may have missed if the daruma or daruda (i seen different names for it) red dolls with the one eye and solid white eye you actually supposed to paint the other eye in and i missed a lot before realizing you can paint in the eye xD another thing i noticed was power slashing the 3 skulls imp grants 3 fangs every time you power slash them on finishing them making them a good early fang farming monster

Nope! When you die like that you basically consume one life point, like you've taken damage in a fight. The death you have to avoid for the achivement is what would give you a game over screen, which only happens when you completely run out of life points. Even then, if you have a full Astral pouch it'll be consumed to resurrect you, just once per fight if I remember correctly.

Hey quick question if you failed in a minigame or you spend too much time in the water or been in the cursed zone for too long and died does that count to actually dying in the game, I am trying to get Barking Up the Cherry Tree and I want to know.
