The safe in the cave is indeed tied to the optional boss. First off, as far as the safe combination is concerned; I am to believe the numbers differ from playthrough to playthrough--or rather--are generated from the beginning of a new game. The snakes --more specifically the enemies known as chypers , hold the key to obtaining the player's individual 4 digit code. The green cypher in Prospect Bluffs is located in the mines where you would go on to confront Creed Little--more specifically; the third room near the mine cart. The red cypher can be found commonly amongst enemies encountered in Fool's Feast. The gold cypher is in the wine cellar of the church in San Gonzales. The blue cypher stands alone in an alley nearby Dr. Sawbone's "office" in Cyprus Flats.
malcolmxsj16 27/mar./2021 às 17:49
Each cypher's body is contorted to resemble a number and in my playthrough--as well as the very few I've seen on YouTube, they normally come in the shapes of 3, 8 and 9. It may be possible that they come in even more numbers, but this is not something I can confirm. As for the order of these four digits; that is based on the order in which the player claimed their respective bounties. For example, if Creed was the fourth bounty claimed by the player then whatever number the cypher in Prospect Bluffs is shaped like will be the fourth digit of the safe's code. It could also be plausible that the colored picture of the snake carving in Rusty's doghouse takes this possibility into account. Rusty's doghouse is made available for 100% completing the game. The picture I'm referring to depicts the same snake carving except, each section of it is colored differently--matching the four colors of each cypher.
malcolmxsj16 27/mar./2021 às 17:48
In my playthrough the colors matched from head-to-tail in the order of which I encountered them. However, I'd have to say this lends little credence to the idea that the cyphers' colors (number order) are undoubtedly set in stone. Now moving on to explaining how this ties into the optional boss. In the beginning  of the game--going through the Boothill cemetery, there is one gravestone that prompts some very intriguing dialogue. Later in the game, during a camping session, there is a cutscene in which Doc and Rosy tell a ghost story. This retelling may prompt the player to recall the mysterious, aforementioned  gravestone at the cemetery. This is all I'm willing to say on the matter, but hopefully it points gamers in the right direction. And as a helpful hint for those struggling with finding recipes: 3 or 4 are tethered to NPCs in the Chuckwagon Competition and 6 are from an NPC near the Howl family farm.

There is no place to rehear the story, but I do have it on Youtube: https://youtu.be/LmeiiqMNatk

It's right at the beginning, so you don't have to scroll through the video to find it.

I'm wondering if the safe contains the Fool's Gold that we're looking for. Otherwise, the only mention of the stuff was in Creed's scenario where he stole some from Blaze for Kipp's Apparatus.
Victorian GentleByrd 22/jan./2018 às 23:57
I noticed that tomb, but since I wasn't able to find another mention of the silent rider I didn't think of it.
Is there a place to rehear that story?
All I can remember from it is that their fools gold was taken from them and their horses hooves were chopped off.
I could buy 4 hooves, but I haven't been able to find any fool's gold
ZMMX  [autor(a)] 22/jan./2018 às 19:33
The secret boss of the game is the Silent Rider, Davey Babcock. You see his grave near the start of the game and he mentions he is still looking for what was taken from him. I've been going around talking to NPCs for clues and I found the one who spoils the story before anything related to the Silent Rider.
Victorian GentleByrd 22/jan./2018 às 15:51
First, thanks for the guide.
I would never have guessed that meta question master safe without this

Secondly I have finished almost all of the game (I still have the chuckwagon competitions to complete and getting every hat and lvling them), yet I still can't figure the "In the Cave" safe out.

I thought since there there was a snake the clue would be at snake tail river.
after a lot of guesses with logs, that snake at the circus, and those buffalo skulls I couldn't find any working solutions.

If that optional boss you were mentioning was racculla , then I don't know how they connect since the boss in questioning doesn't use any numbered attacks or stuff that could be extracted as a code.

So any help with this would be much appreciated.
ZMMX  [autor(a)] 29/dez./2017 às 10:43
That one I am a little on the fence about. When you beat the game, Ralph Ewing will be there and warns you that this is not a Question Master safe, describes it as the hardest thing in the game, and due to it being in Prospect Bluffs, I suspect it has to do with the game's optional boss. Either that is your reward for beating him, or that is the item that will summon him, I'm suspecting.
Voxwave 29/dez./2017 às 0:51
Good guide; thanks for taking the time to make it! Will the "In the Cave" combination from Prospect Bluffs be put in later?
