Introduction
This is only my second guide.
Made this for snipertoaster, who wanted to know how to army.

Changelog:
November 28: Added bowcube army upgrade info.
Obtaining a basic Army
To obtain a basic army of peasants, one must take over locations so that their icons become blue. Once this occurs units of peasants will appear and will march toward Oldhome Castle. Once they reach the castle, you can access the castle menu with f, hit the garrison button, click on the words "Warling Peasant" and click the plus icon to add the unit to your army. When there are multiple, you can hold click to take them out faster. Your castle has a base unit cap of 200 (or 100, can't remember) units, meaning units will stop appearing in the garrison after 200 are there. You must then take them out before new ones can appear there. Warling Prisoners will come from Cutthroat Quarry if it is conquered, and they are slightly weaker than peasants.
Upgrading
Peasants can be upgraded if they get enough kills (not you).
The peasant can first be upgraded to a more powerful and resilient peasant, the Militia, which wears different clothing but has the same weapons.
The Militia can then be upgraded to a Light Infantry, which is even more powerful and resilient with leather armor and daggers or sticks.
A Light Infantry can be upgraded to a Heavy Infantry, which is, again, even more resilient with pothelm armor and an axe or shortsword.
A Heavy Infantry can be upgraded to a Knight, the most powerful and highest level of army, with the knight armor and a sword and shield.

You can also choose to upgrade a peasant to a Peasant Hunter, who shoots arrows. They 4 hit kill regular enemies though, so I do not reccomend using just these..
A Peasant Hunter can then be upgraded to a Peasant Bowcube. They are the same as Hunters, but have leather armor that can take more hits.
A Peasant Bowcube can then be upgraded to a Bowcube. They shoot slightly faster, three hit kill regular enemies, and have leather armor.
A Bowcube can then be upgraded to a Longbowcube. They shoot slower, but 1 hit kill regular enemies and wear pothelms.
Instead you can also upgrade a Bowcube to a Crossbowcube. They shoot at normal speeds, but 2 hit kill regular enemies. They also wear pothelms.

Prisoners can be upgraded to Militia and follow the same path as Peasants.
However, they can also be upgraded to Rebel Fighters, who are as powerful as Light Infantry. These cannot be upgraded anymore though.
Secret Army Members
Craigz is currently the only secret army member. You can get him by typing "helpmecraigz" into the CODE menu. He has no upgrades.

Typing the code "take steady aim" will award you fifteen peasant bowcubes.

You must capture a location that originally spawned reds (e.g. Brothers’ Beach and Fellwood Outpost).

How do I actually get peasants to go to the castle? I have captured places (jerry's gate etc), why wont they spawn?

Well they aren't things you can use. A location has a certain permit. If it's hero permit, only you, not your army, can go. If it's squad, only 3 troops can go. If it's army, your whole army can go.

yes
how do you use things like squad permits and bring armys into battle
