Thureos Shield Template

The thyreos or thureos was a wood and leather oval shield originally used by the Illyrians. It became ubiquitous in most Hellenistic armies. Thyreophoroi who weilded the shield functioned as light infantry capable of skirmishing and then falling back into a phalanx-like formation in a shield wall.

This mod provides the model and texture template you need to make your own thureos shield without using 3ds Max. Simply open any of the texture files in Gimp, Photoshop, or whatever you like and paint to your heart's content. The mod includes 28 thureos textures from Rome II Total War - all credits to Creative Assembly. These textures have already been formated to work with the thureos model and are ready to go. Use the ReplaceTexture function in your anim mods to cycle between these HD textures which look absolutely beautiful in-game.

There is also a hoplie anim file which overrides the vanilla hoplite and is already set up to use the thureos shield so you can test your thureos textures in-game. Delete or rename the anim file to prevent it from overriding the vanilla hoplite.

I made this mod specifically for texture artists and anim modders. I release all content herein to the public domain. Please credit Creative Assembly if you use their textures.


Technical remarks: Shield mesh is 50 vertices (vanilla hoplite shield is 9 vertices iirc). Textures are 512x512. No noticable performance issues with >100 objects on screen. Some CA textures may have transparency issues as a result of the port. The UV map is set up to accomodate the specific texture format so don't draw outside the lines.
