Playing Cave Story's AGTP translation

The "+" version from Steam has few shortcomings compared to the freeware original. In particular, some prefer the old translation.
This short guide tells you how to enjoy the game for the first time with the original translation with a few simple changes.

Patching translation

Cave Story could be one of the best indie game of all time for many reasons, the least of which isn't its story. Unfortunately, Nicalis created their own translation distinct from the freeware's version that some feel is notably worse. If this is your first time playing the game, I think you'd enjoy the characters much more with the freeware's translation. Would you rather have Balrog's iconic "Huzzah!" or Kool-aid Man's "Oh Yeah!"? To get started:

• Extract the entire 'AGTPStory' folder into '\Steam\steamapps\common\Cave Story+\data' folder
  
• Inside the 'data' folder, edit the text file "mods" by adding the following line at the end and save:
  

  07 R+       /AGTPStory/mod/

• Now within the Challenges menu, you should see an option to start a new game with the AGTP Story.

You're done! If you see Balrog say "Huzzah" the next time you see him you'll know it worked.

Regarding the issue with Balfrog not spawning (as well as later bosses, tried it), I fixed it by copying stage.tbl from steamapps\common\Cave Story+\data\base and pasting it in steamapps\common\Cave Story+\data\AGTPStory\mod

Thank you, I'll test and see if Balfrog is glitched for me too while Halloween graphics are active.. I favored this method for the guide because it's easily reversible, but if it is broken I'll have to just change it again

This patch breaks the Balfrog boss fight. Balrog simply disappears and you're trapped in the room forever. Besides, installing this patch isn't even necessary. You can change the translation to the Aeon Genesis one by doing this: Go the the freeware version's directory and navigate to the "data" folder. Copy all of the files with the extension ".tsc," then go the the CS+ directory and navigate to data>base. Paste the files there, and overwrite them when asked. Then, go back to the freeware version directory, navigate to data>Stage, copy all the .tsc files there, and paste them in Cave Story+>data>base>Stage, again, overwriting the existing files there. If you did it all correctly, the inventory descriptions and the in-game dialogue will now be the Aeon Genesis version.

It's still installed on my old rig, but I haven't had access to it for YEARS now and thought that now that I can play the game again it'd be nice to have the translation handy.

I downloaded that, but that doesn't seem to pertain to the Steam version. It includes two executable files and the readme text that comes with them talks about the original freeware version of the game.

I kinda regret buying this, lol. All the charm I felt playing the original is lost with the new graphics and music and translation... the new translation feels very clunky and awkward compared to the original fanlation, even setting aside the "Huzzah" thing, lol. It just feels slightly off... But at least I gave the creator some money I guess... thanks for this mod :)
