AFK rod of discord/chaos elemental farm

Tired of walking around the undergound Hallow looking for Chaos elementals? Is that 0.2% drop rate for the Rod of Discord draining the life out of you? Then this AFK farm is for you!

For starters....

This hasn't worked yet, still waiting on the Rod of Discord. But I did get the Frozen Turtle Shell, twice... it has a 1% drop rate. It worked! I got the Rod of Discord after about 1,000 Chaos Elementals, also got 5 Frozen Turtle Shells... fun.

You'll need some basic stuff. First, a knowledge of what you're looking for. The Rod of Discord is a post-hardmode tool/weapon/weird thing. It allows you to teleport where ever you click when you have it selected, but when you use it you get a debuff called the Chaos State, this makes you take 1/7th of your HP if you use the rod again before 6 seconds is up.

Next you need to have progressed past the Wall of Flesh, so if you haven't gone to the underworld, killed a giant boss and came back again you should go do that. Great, on to the next thing

The last thing you'll need is equipment and weapons. I would do this after you've beaten Moon Lord due to the fact that the high damage weapons and 'turrets', but you can do it before then. You'll need:

• A weapon that can go though walls or a yoyo (yoyos aren't as safe but still work)
  
• Something that will damage enemies without your direction, these include turrets (like from the DDII event) or equipment (like the Spore Sack, an expert mode drop from Plantera)
  
• Something to dig with
  
• Time
  
• Wings
  
• Strong armor
  
• An arena, I'll go over that in a bit
  
• And an underground Hallow biome

Right'o, with that done we can move on.

Preparing the ground....

This is the second most boring part of this guide, digging. For this farm you need a large space in the caverns layer (which is still called underground Hallow). I would use the DCU for this job, but if you really, really want you can use just about anything. The space should be tall enough that you can make a platform in the upper portion of it and have the bottom be 50 blocks or so away (don't make it much more or nothing will spawn). The sides should also be kinda far away, but they don't have to stay off your screen (I can see about 5 blocks on either side with a 1920x1080 screen).

Fast forwarding anywhere from a few minutes to hours upon hours, you need to build the so called platform. It should be 45-55 blocks away from the bottom, 25ish blocks long (24 if you want to stay in the exact middle) and have a hollowed out 4x4 block for you to sit in (yoyo users need to leave the top off). It's also very helpful to have some water candles out (found in the dungeon) as they'll increase the spawn rate of enemies thus making Chaos elementals spawn more (along with everything else). You need to place them on a table or platforms, so make sure to bring those. You can also dig out the bottom two blocks of the hollowed block and stick convayor belts along the platform, slimes will be able to get in but everything will come to you as long as it's killed on the platform.

If you want to farm while alt-tabbed, you can host the world with steam multiplayer disabled (to prevent people from joining, this is an option while hosting in-game). This also has the benefit of being able to open the chat to keep track of things like killed enemies (banners dropped), Solar Eclipses occuring, etc.

I'm not sure how to, or if you can, quote comments, so this'll have to do for now.

Now on to the farming!

The battle waiting....

To start up the farm stand on the platform, in the box if you want to stay alive. If you have the Spore Sack you can actually just leave now, just make sure to stop by now and then to pick up loot and coins. For those of you with sentry minions you may have to replace them, as of 1.3.4 the mechanics changed and I have no idea anymore. If you don't have either of this things you can change it to a manual farm and just kill the elementals with normal weapons, you'll also have to deal with bats and enemies falling from the ceiling. For even more loot you can kill the Ice Tortoises jumping below you with the Solar Eruption or a yoyo (the Spore Sack will kill one every once in a while). If you are killing things below the platform make sure to jump down sometimes and gather coins and stuff.

This does not give you the Rod of Discord quickly! It will always be hard to get the rod as long as it has a 0.2% drop rate (for every 1,000 you kill you should get 2). Though you will get some other kinda cool things.

While you wait you could like this guide, then read other guides*, plain your life, build something with a name brand building block, eat some food*, write a guide on waiting in mob farms, write a guide that shows how to build every mob farm, then get off Terraria and sleep to try another day. Cry about getting a bunch of other rare items but not the Rod of Discord*. But whatever you do don't click off of Terraria, that pauses it.

The opposite happened to me, i was trying to get frozen turtle shells and got a rod of discord on my 49th chaos elemental.
