When I mentioned them making AoW4 over Planetfall I was thinking more about how awesome Planetfall LOOKS and (seems to) play. Makes me wish I was into that kinda stuff...
When you get the best mods (you need the expansions for them) for Age of Wonders III, like Empire Building mod, Chivalrous Intentions, New Arsenal, Deluxe Specialization Combination etc it is almost like Age of Wonders 4. Lots of new units for every race and class, new buildings, new mystic city upgrades, race experience leading to upgrades for the while race etc.
I've heard Endless Legend is good but i've never tried it.
I tried Age of Wonders 3 as one of my first 4X games (SK was like 2nd or 3rd) once I got my big screen 4k and discovered the wonder that is the steam controller (for games like 4X, at least). I LOVE how it looks. I wanted SO badly to be able to get into that game, but I just couldn't. I don't know why.... I just get bored way too fast. I wish they woulda made AoW4 instead of Planetfall (i'm all-in on "swords and sorcery" and dislike anything Futuristic/Sci-Fi (although Endless Legend strikes a decent balance...that's another game I wanted to love but it was too much for me since I'm fairly new to 4X games).
Man... wouldn't it be nice if they came out with a true sequel to SK (not "Rivals".....). I still need to play FE:LE (now that they FINALLY fixed UI scaling with 1440 and 2160p screens), and I keep hearing that's by far their best game, but something about SK really sucked me in when I first played it. Playing it on a large screen 4k tv with a steam controller from bed is just so relaxing, haha.
