Intro
An injector is a component that runs in another game's process, and as such can modify or add features to the game.

VR Toolbox' DX injector allows DirectX games to VSync to the HMD at 90 Hz, as opposed to the monitor, which typically runs at 60. Furthermore, it allows for VR Toolbox to capture the game's screen and display it in VR with significantly minimized latency (<10 ms), compared to traditional approaches, such as capturing the desktop and displaying that.

Note that the injector only works on PCs where the same GPU renders the desktop and drives the HMD. Thus, it is disabled for laptops with an iGPU driving the screen and dGPU driving the VR HMD.
Game / GPU Configuration
The injector only works for Direct3D 11 games, so apply these settings only for such games (ie Dirt 3, Witcher 3).

Follow these:

  • Run the game in windowed mode.
  • Turn off Vsync in the game.
  • Set Vsync to "Use the 3D application setting" in the GPU control panel.

The last 2 steps are needed for VRT to Vsync the game to the HMD (@90 Hz) as opposed to the monitor (@60 Hz).

To verify that the injector is running, once the game starts, you should see a new VR screen showing the game only.

For non-DX11 games, VR Toolbox falls back to desktop capture. We recommend keeping Adaptive Sync enabled in the NVIDIA Control Panel.

Note: we previously supported DX9 injection too, but a recent Windows or GPU driver update decreased the performance of a particular operation it requires, and so we had to turn it off.
SteamVR Settings
  • Turn off "Desktop Game Theatre" in Steam->Settings->In-Game.
  • If you want to engage the VRT First Person Mode, turn off "Asynchronous Reprojection" in SteamVR->Settings->Developer.
First Person Mode
VR Toolbox supports FPS mode, where the HMD orientation is translated to mouse movement. This lets you look around in first-person shooters by moving your head. Activate the mode by looking at the screen that you want to activate it on, and then press CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE.

If the game supports adjusting the field of view, set it to 100 degrees or more.

The VR Toolbox GUI contains various options for tuning your experience:

does this work with SteamPlay/Proton?

The injector will not, meaning games might need to be run in windowed full-screen mode in some version of Windows.

This will not work at all with a laptop?

I know right? I didn't play/buy a 2d game for over a year either after I got my MHDs. Good thing the tech is 'just-a-fad' Lol!

Thank you! I'll have to try messing around with that! -I haven't played a 2d game in almost a year!
