no.1 install game to PC
no.2 after go to where you have installed the game and go into properties-Compatibility and set Compatibility mode to windows XP (service pack 3) or windows 7 if you want to use steam overlay

recommended for widescreen displays
no.3 make a shortcut and to into the shortcut's properties
type this in target

original version: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Codemasters\Colin McRae Rally 2005\cmr5.exe" "WIDESCREENDISPLAY"
if you have gog version just add "WIDESCREENDISPLAY" in the end of the target add a space after cmr5.exe"

this will add
widescreen 16:10 and 16:9 ratio aspect like the Xbox version fov adjust and widescreen hud
if you have 4:3 screen leave this out

problems that are still present
can not pause with controller even in CMR 3 or 04 only if you have it on windows XP (service pack 3)
v-scan has to be on at all times if off your game will stutter and will be unplayable

Search on Google "Colin McRae Rally 2005 v1.1 multi5 no-dvd/fixed files and open GameCopyWorld site. Download it. The folder contains instructions for installation. You need patch 1.1 for Colin McRae 2005 which can be found on Google. This is how I got the game to work in new Windows versions. The resolution can also be at least 1440P if not more.

I was adding:
-WIDESCREEN
At the end of the target, and it wouldn't work. The only way for it to work is with the quoutation marks (no hyphen) and a space before it. (As you said!) Thanks
