This study seeks to explore the lived-in experience of eight participants aged between 20 and 22, who utilise loot boxes. This research aimed to discuss the appeal and consequences of loot boxes. Alongside, discussing why some associate loot box utilisation with gambling. To do this, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis is used to include a distinctive method to extrapolate as much information as possible. This study found three master themes, with a total of nine sub-themes.

The master themes discussed are 1) Games as a commodity, 2) pay to escape and 3) Justifying the appeal of loot boxes. In conclusion, participants discuss years of gradual change in video-games and a hyper-globalised world.
