Hollow Knight is a special game. It is difficult to find something negative to say about it.

The controls are some of the most responsive I have seen in these types of games. It makes traversing throughout the world very satisfying, and it becomes even better as you unlock more movement abilities. The game is listed as a platformer but challenging platforming sections are very few. The main point is exploration. You explore until you reach a wall. You explore somewhere else. You find an ability that allows you to break through that wall, you find new places to explore and so on. You unlock stag stations that allow you to travel between each area, but in my opinion there could be even more, because some areas are massive.

Combat is fluid and simple. You have some sword attacks and some magic. The variety comes in the form of enemies. There are over 150 different types of enemies to keep you on your toes. Bosses are well designed and offer a good challenge even for veterans. Builds come in the form of charms, and although a lot of charms are good, some of them are a bit lacking, and you will most likely find yourself using the same charms everyone else uses by the end.

The music and the artstyle perfectly complement the story and the lore. Hallownest is way past its days of glory, so the NPCs are few. However, in addition to the charming designs and voice acting, each of them has a story of their own and it makes progressing through the game even more exciting when you see that your friends are also progressing with you and even helping you at certain instances.

Lastly I need to mention the content as a whole. Hollow Knight is massive, and it will probably take you around 100 hours if you want to experience everything that it has to offer. The fact that this game costs $15 and goes on sale frequently is absolutely absurd. So absurd in fact that fans of the game have actually asked Team Cherry to increase the price.

This was the first big project Team Cherry has published and there were certainly a lot of limitations during production like time and money. Even with that in mind the result was still a 10/10 game. Now they are developing Silksong without any of those limitations, which means they can let their imagination run wild, and who knows what the result will be. With Silksong being expected to release before June, now is the perfect time to play Hollow Knight.
