Oh no, its not a game, its a compatibility layer for yours games to make them run better on Linux. I and plenty of people use them all the time, its completely safe.

to install a custom version of Proton, these versions usually have much better compatibilty than the official release. You could also try and go to Proton DB.com and search for the game you want to play, people will usually have fixes for common problems on each games page. Hey dude, which Company of Heros game were you wanting to play? If its the second it should be native on Linux, and the first has a Gold rating on ProtonDB, so it shouldent be hard to get working. Have you enabled Steam Play in the settings?
