Despite his lack of military experience, John Brown Gordon learned fast. With a natural leadership skill he was given many promotions and rose the ranks fast. His devotion to his men was undying, by his utter fearlessness in the face of fire. Gordon always rode tall on horseback even in the face of fire and his men falling by his side.

At Malvern Hill Gordon's company was exposed to union fire from the front and his men were dying rapidly. But despite this Gordon fearlessly continued to urge his men forward. A shell landed next to him during the battle and temporarily blinded him. He walked away with minor injury's and lived to fight again. He survived the remainder of the war and his bravery will not be forgotten.

Thomas Nettles was shot in the shoulder, but George Bernard picked up the flag and the next day bernard rushed infront of the regiment the men shouted for him to retreat but he said “Dammed if he’d fall back,” and stayed his place until the battle was over at Eltham’s Landing.

Colonel A.T. Rainey admired his courage and sacrifice and the corpral George Bernard was made color sergeant of the first texas that day. :)
