Once in a blue moon, a game is released that not only breaks the mold of video games and storytelling as it is, but encaptures what is to be not only the future of gaming, but of art itself. There Is A Genie In My Szechuan Sauce, a masterpiece made by Bmc Studio, a pioneer in art, games, and storytelling, is one of these works. The excellent dialogue and plot tells not only a story of love, hate, and the socioeconomic problems of the modern man, but brings about emotions that may have never been conceivable beforehand. The way that The Genie is presented as a commentary on socio-nihilistic principles, the futility of man, and overall the darkness of the heart of men. This is represented by the sacrifice of Paul and his soon replacement with Paula, with this sacrifice being representative of this futility as it is comparable to the disposability of man shown in both capitalist and socialist principles. This is mirrored by the plights of Jeff, the main protagonist and representative of sweet innocence and its spoiling through greed and how it is found in the hearts of all men. Paula is representative of the American dream and her dialogue references works such as the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Human Stain by Philip Roth. Her love side-plot with Jeff rivals great romantic stories found in all literature as it is both detailed and nuanced to the point of emotional brilliance. Lastly, the epic conclusion involving the finding of the sauce, a representation of the great wealth all men yearn for, provides an ending to this arc worthy of tears.
