If you are thinking about trying wurm, you will probably first see all of the negative reviews at the top. Please take them with an extreme grain of salt, as they are written by a group of players with a long history of toxicity and personal vendetta with other player groups and the developers.

These are players that played in a certain period of wurm online's run that they considered the most ideal and were angered through a series of poorly implicated pvp mechanics and lack of attention from the developers over the years. You probably won't even find most of them in the game, as so many of these players have not played for around 8 years or so and have commonly made it clear that they will never play again but still have continued voicing off their complaints in the forums since then.

Although the staff can be reported to be pretty incompetent sometimes, you will probably never even be affected by them if you even interact with them at all. So many of negative reviews voicing complaints on how the staff treated certain players are actually made by either the affected player themselves or a close friend and heavily biased. They are also upvoted by the same group of people they belong to. Overall these players are not leaving negative reviews in a way to accurately review the game, but to instead cause the steam release of wurm online to fail out of spite for the staff that runs the game.

Wurm Online is commonly a game that people can either feel zero interest in playing as soon as they start or play non stop for years because there is no other game like it.

If you enjoy these traits in a game you will likely enjoy Wurm:

Skill Grinding (Like Runescape)

Wide Variety of Specialized Skills, Game Mechanics, and being rewarded for using them. Seriously, there are so many skills. Each skill has many subskills. There are 5 different types of carpentry and smithing among so many others and leveling each one will let you produce high quality items in each one.

Highly versatile and scaling Profession and character identity: If you are the highest level blacksmith you can produce the highest quality tools that no one else can. Same with locksmithing, hot food cooking, etc. Each Skill is a pretty big time investment, so you will likely never be the best at everything and will rely on others for other products especially if they trained something niche but useful like coal making.

A whole flexed out religion system. This is one of my favorites.

Interesting PVP mechanics of building fortresses and different things in certain area as part of long term strategic planning. You can even participate in pvp without fighting by crafting armor, weapons, boats, and loads of other things for the fighters to use in battle.

Booze Making with real time aging and benefits from higher quality aged vintages

Why you won't like Wurm:

Can be very tedious and take awhile to do simple tasks. Seriously if you can't stand any tedium or time investment you probably won't like this game. I commonly play it on a second monitor while I do something on the first, like I do in runescape.

Punishing and commonly frustrating mechanics, deaths, mobs that will not stop chasing you that you can't outrun. The map doesn't track your location live and you have to rely on a compass, landmarks and anything players built, and a vague idea of where you are on the map. You also drop items on death and lose some skills. It is very common to get lost, die, and spend an unreasonable amount of time trying to find your body.

Premium model with (some) microtransactions. You will see a common complaint here that you have to use an in game item obtained with microtransactions to make settlements, but you can still build less protected settlements without some of the benefits of one without making it official. Even then, your best bet as a new player would be to find another group of people and join their settlement. This is extremely easy, and it's common for people to not enjoy the game as much as they would because they instead go solo. Wurm is mostly meant to be a game meant to be played with other people and cooperate.

Overall Wurm is a very niche game which can quickly become a favorite to people if it matches their preferences.

If you agree with the statement at the beginning of this review, please vote on it to bring it to the top so any potential new players can see it above the negatives. I don't want people turned off this game because of these people.
