Dragon Ball Z Kakarot is an amazing roleplaying game (RPG) for Dragon Ball fans. The mechanics might be a bit too simple to satisfy hardcore RPG players and the fighting to easy to fully satisfy fighting game players, but if you're a fan of the franchise there is a lot to love here.

Gameplay reminded me a lot of a Yakuza game mixed with Legacy of Goku II on Gameboy Advance. That means you play through the Dragon Ball Z storyline from Saiyan saga to Buu saga (and beyond with the DLC), but you can explore the semi-open world between missions and pick up sidequests to level your characters.

The playable characters are maybe not as diverse as other DBZ games. You will mostly play as Goku Gohan, Piccolo and Vegeta with the occasional side character like Trunks, Gotenks and Vegito. Characters like Krillin, Tien and Yamcha are not playable, but can sometimes join your party as NPC's.

DBZ Kakarot offers some minigames in the open world like driving cars and a robot, fishing and cooking, but it does not add much aside from a little variety and some stat boosts for your characters. Some players might get some enjoyment out of the cardgame that was added as free DLC.

Overall DBZ Kakarot is one of my personal favorite Dragon Ball games. Combat is very easy, but the charm of the world, it's music and a good retelling of the classic Dragon Ball Z story make it worth playing.
