The original eurojank boomer shooter! Chasm is a quirky, creative, and fun "bargain bin" FPS that takes obvious inspiration from Quake but adds tons of its own flavor in terms of weapons, enemy designs, and locales, and remains surprisingly fun even today. It's also influenced an equally surprising number of new wave boomer shooters, such as HROT and Perilous Warp, and even my own game Dusk.

This particular port is... well, not really a port as such. More of a reverse engineering and by-sight recreation, as the source code was apparently lost. It's not a perfect recreation but it's close enough, with most of the changes being minor differences in lighting and particle effects that only dedicated fans of the original would notice. It's a fair tradeoff for the silky smooth framerate, high res support, and across the board QoL improvements the port offers. I'd definitely recommend it as the best way to experience Chasm for the first time.

But if you want to check out the game in its 100% original form... you can do that also! This version comes with a special DosBox port of the original game which I gather was overseen by the DosBox team themselves to get it running as smoothly as possible. The original game is notoriously tricky to run through DosBox, and previously the best way to play it was my own package called Chasm Portable, which combined several fixes to make it relatively playable. From what I've seen, this DosBox version is just as good or better than what I put together, and is likely now the definitive way to emulate og Chasm.

I'm biased, since Chasm is a big part of what originally got me into play first person shooters, and eventually making first person shooters, but that aside... I'd still recommend it as more than just a nostalgic throwback. It's weird and kind of janky but remains quite fun and compelling even now, and has now been made that much more accessible and playable thanks to this port.

I hate the terms "boomer shooter" and especially "eurojank" so much. Bethesda games are always buggy, broken and kinda "quirky" at launch but nobody calls them "amerikajank"

The starting shotgun sucks
The db barrel shotgun sucks

Every ranged enemy just hitscans you no matter how fast you are strafing or dodging
So you're just forced to exchange hits no matter what you do unless the enemy doesn't get the time to shoot you (the minigun is your best bet in this demo since the shotgun and db shotgun are just too slow to keep the enemy from shooting)

Very good game. Needs to be little bit more accurate on the Depth Charge damage Near misses still did damage to a sub.

This is one of those games I never got to play when I was younger, going to wish list it now. I can see how it could have influenced Dusk. Also noticed you played more after the review, which is a good sign.

Welp, if the dev of my favorite game of the past few years loves this game, guess it's gotta be worth a look.
