Synopsis
Horizon Zero Dawn is an open world adventure in a post-apocalyptic future.

Story
Man has managed to destroy his world and thanks to the dedication of some brilliant people, survive. Now machines run wild in the world and humans hunt them to survive. You play as Aloy, an outcast of her tribe, raised by another outcast. When she becomes of age she is allowed to compete in a trial to claim a place in the tribe.

Gameplay
The game mostly forces you to play as a hunter, melee combat is very difficult as you are unable to really control where your character strikes and you do much less damage than you do from a distance with bow style weapons. There are some rogue like skills you can learn as your progress that will allow single strike attacks on smaller machines. For the larger machines melee combat is not recommended.

You will also have some human combat, let's face it, any time order breaks down there are a few bad apples. Fortunately most of the human you can take out with a headshot. There are "boss" humans who may take a few more hits, but for the most part human on human combat is on equal footing. Unless of course you count the weapons wielded by the boss. If you kill the boss you can pick up their weapon and use it for yourself. The weapon has a limited number of charges and you won't be able to craft ammo for it. They are usually heavy weapons, so your movement will be slower while you use it.

You can have four weapons equipped at any time, each weapon has multiple ammunition types. Your job is to match the right weapon and the right ammo with the machine you are trying to kill.

You have the ability to target different parts of the machines to do more damage, unfortunately this doesn't apply to the animals that you hunt. A head shot to an animal does just as much damage as an arrow in the rear. On the plus side you can either destroy or detach parts of the machines. Detaching parts will have different effects. Some you can pick up for crafting, others will deal massive damage as they explode, some weapons can be picked up and used. Just like the human boss weapons they are heavy with a limited number of charges. Ravagers became my personal favorite, remove their gun, kill them and their friends.

There is no way to pass the time at night. I HATE playing in the dark, it is even worse when the blue light attached to your right ear about blinds you as you attempt to aim.

Forget about a fair fight, you will die. Most of the time there will be more machines than the number of characters in your group. If the number is the same or less you can bet they are high powered and it is going to take a bit of time to burn them down. Machines will target you behind objects and later in the game will focus solely on you, even though there are multiple people in your group. This makes combat difficult as melee is about worthless and getting any distance to use a ranged weapon is difficult due to the intense focus on you.

Once you figure out that distance is your friend you can lay traps and strike from a distance. Even later on in the game with the best weapons and all skills learned you will still take time to kill the machines. Most of the boss battles will last an entire day of game time as you are busy running for your life while attempting to shoot the machine. Even if you find a safe place the low amount of damage you deal makes the battles take all day.

You will need to reach places that are not easy. I had to restart from a save point due to gaining access to an area where I could not exit, get used to it. There are areas obviously marked where you can climb for most of these, Tomb Raider style paint show you the way. Not that it is the only way.

"The Cut" portion of the game looks to have been added later. The problem with this is that since the Cut quests are higher levels you will most likely finish the game before you finish the Cut. You can continue after you finish the game, however the last quest is reset and the game will frequently switch to it automatically.

Once you have access to the unlimited Fast Travel things go much better as you can travel to the closest camp and then proceed along your quest. This makes getting things done go much quicker. The mounts are basically worthless as you can move faster on foot, their control is not intuitive.

Final Verdict
I recommend this game. There is a lot to like, but there is a lot of frustration along the way. The story is mostly solid.
