I'm not even a quarter of the way in and so far it's been an absolute joy.
* The world is gorgeous. It's a breathtaking scale with so much detail packed in.
* The soundtrack does a great job of setting the atmosphere.
* Each puzzle mechanic introduced has been interesting.
* The characters and story are captivating.

I'm eager to see what comes next.

Celeste is an amazing game

The movement is Celeste is one of the best things about this game. Your character feels incredibly responsive. A crucial component of a precision platformer game. The movement is incredibly precise, natural, and most importantly, feels good. Every mistake feels like your fault; not the game’s fault.

Celeste's art style is incredibly well done. The pixel graphics show a lot of attention to detail and polish. Particle effects accentuate the gameplay giving weight to your movement. The background art is incredibly detailed giving each chapter its own distinct theme. The retro aesthetic gives the game a unique and consistent style.

The difficulty curve of each chapter feels very natural. New mechanics are taught in a safe and small room, before slowly ramping up the difficulty as the chapter progresses with the final rooms being a test of all your skills up to that point.

For those that like this difficulty, there are B-Sides of each level which are more difficult versions of the chapter. Completing those, there are C-Sides which are monstrously hard but short levels which push the difficulty to its limit. Finishing all of those, there is Chapter 9. The exceptionally difficult (and appropriately named) Farewell chapter. (You can access Chapter 9 earlier, but it is highly recommended to complete at least the B-Sides stuff before it)

Even with this difficulty, the game is still accessible to everyone. Celeste includes an “Assist Mode” which allows you to tune the difficulty down by slowing down the game, adding more dashes, or adding invincibility should you feel like it. This game is difficult but it is not unfair. It actively encourages you to persist through this difficulty.

Be proud of your death count! The more you die, the more you’re learning.

The story feels like it is naturally incorporated into the game. The game at its core is about climbing a mountain. A fairly straight forward metaphor about dealing with mental issues where your biggest enemy is yourself. The story develops very organically throughout the game.

The soundtrack is phenomenal. Each chapter has its own unique set of tracks that blend in perfectly with the theme and aesthetic of the chapter. The entire soundtrack is memorable.

With all of the above, this makes Celeste an absolute masterpiece. 10/10.

Ori and the Blind Forest is a metroidvania platformer game.

Each area has its own distictive visual theme and backing soundtrack.
  • + Absolutely fantastic soundtrack

The platforming is difficult but fair. There are difficulty options which increase or decrease enemy and environmental damage.
  • + Adjustable difficulty
  • ~ Pretty difficult
Movement in this game is very responsive and fluid. Each abilitiy earned throughout the game feel unique. This game is great for speedrunning as well.
  • + Gameplay mechanics are great
  • + Great potential for speedruns
