I only got into this series super seriously around a month ago. Last year I finished Adventure, as well as the classic games, played Adventure 2, dropped it, then picked Adventure 2 back up last month to finish it. After that I played through all the mainline games except 3 & Knuckles, Unleashed (because emulator issues), Lost World, and Forces. Playing through these games made me fall in love with the series but as I got to Colors I felt so incredibly sad about where this series went. I didn't like Colors, I thought Generations was just fine at best. Yet you should also take my opinions with a grain of salt, Shadow the Hedgehog is my 4th favorite game in the series, I think its story is horrible, but its so bad that I find it funny, but its gameplay I find super solid. And I played through Sonic P-06, then the original after that, I ended up falling in love with 06 because of its potential and I felt like the story was incredible.

Now let me get to the point that I was leading up to. Playing Frontiers was something I was scared to do. I don't like the boost games very much, besides Unleashed, even tho I only played a small amount of the game. I wanted to go into Frontiers with an open mind at least even though I was expecting to be disappointed. I was so incredibly wrong. Sonic Frontiers, is the my favorite game in the series, just ahead of Adventure. From an objective standpoint I understand if people do not like this game as much as others, but from my sense it blended the good of the boost games and brought back the openness of the Adventure style games. I thought this game had an incredible story, and I really adore its ending, However, I'm pretty pissed to know that its not canon anymore. This is the game the series needed, the series needed a fresh start, a blend of old and new. Its really rare for me to connect with games this deeply and this was one that really stood out. I love the open zone gameplay, I thought the cyberspace stages were super cool, except I hate that its just reusing elements from the classic games. For the future of this series I want this gameplay. It would be cool to see this gameplay style in more urban environments like Adventure or Adventure 2. I want a story like this, something with a bittersweet ending. This was a game that left my with tears when I finished it, it has been a long time since a game has left me in tears.

As someone who quickly fell in love with the series and eventually started to have some resentment towards it, I recommend this game heavily. It's a love letter to the classics, to the old storytelling that was once lost in time. This is the game that will right the wrongs of the 2010s games. Frontiers is what will lead to a good future in Sonic. I'm happy with this game, it was not what I expected and I did not want it to be my favorite. I have such a large attachment to Adventure and 06 but this game was just something else. The soundtrack, the story, the gameplay, it was just... perfect. If this is the direction the series goes in, I'm happy to stay apart of these new style of games.
