Also, calling a kernel linux or the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs? It's not one or the other, that's not how essential parts of an operating system work. It's both. Linux is a kernel and is just a part of the system they use. But that's not what you said. You said linux is an operating system which is not true unless you're okay with calling all operating systems GNU/Linux, which means you'd call windows, OSX, and all other operating systems GNU/Linux, too. Which you said you don't.

No one's arguing that.As someone who is a programmer who uses free software, I am telling you, specifically, in free software, no one calls linux an operating system. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. Linux is not an operating system unto itself.

If you're saying "GNU plus Linux" you're referring to a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX, which includes things from trisquel to arch to ubuntu.

So your reasoning for calling linux an operating system is because random people "call the free ones linux?" Lets get windows and OSX in there, then, too.
