Pacing can feel a bit off compared to the other Metro games with the change to an open world. Didn't bother me but YMMV. Exodus looks fantastic especially with the Enhanced Edition if you have the hardware to run it. Game-play still feels great and there's a good amount of content for repeat play-throughs.

Some time after the events at D6, Artyum becomes emboldened to prove if anything has survived outside the Metro. He eventually gets his answer from some early story reveals that I won't spoil and the Spartans special forces team fleeing the Metro on a functional train. This has both story and game-play ramifications that makes this a fairly different experience compared to the prior entries.

The Metro series has never looked better with a good amount of environmental variety with each train stop. A4 Games did a really good job of keeping each map feeling fresh and not the same broken concrete look each time. Enemy types are also helped by this which was a welcomed detail to find out. Animations continue to be well done and textures, shadows, lighting all look great. Music, voice acting & motion capture also keep that high bar of quality and you can always switch to Russian for that extra level of immersion.

Levels aren't linear anymore but instead are now open maps to navigate, however to be clear this isn't S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or Fallout 4, this has clear points of interest to head to with the occasional side objectives to check. There's little benefit to explore if you don't have a clear plan and would likely be a waste of limited resources that could jeopardize the rest of your play-through.

Speaking of resources, you no longer have to care about using your ammo as currency. That's been totally scrapped and now everything revolves around crafting ammo with resources you find in each level. Make sure you check corpses and any abandoned containers laying around. You can sometimes find gear upgrades as well but most of those will be through side quests. Be sure to approach to all NPCs at any story change to trigger dialogue in order to potentially get more quests.

I can't recall if Last Light had this but Exodus has in essence a morality/choice system. Making certain story choices and performing specific combat actions will determine who sticks around on your team as you progress in the story. This will affect some cut-scenes, endings & achievements. Without spelling everything out, you need to choose of either killing everyone or trying to spare\save everyone. Even outside of that, you might miss a few things because of specific quest conditions so maybe be a bad guy 1st and save the guide for your paragon run.

I will also forewarn you that there is no manual save system with only 1 quick save slot available for the whole game. The game will periodically save as well as usually saving before a major scripted cut-scene. This will be something to keep in mind during a hardcore run or a save everyone run where a few mistakes can ruin everything.

If you've waited this long to play this, you may want to hold off until Thursday for the additional Ray-traced only version with DLSS 2.1 provided for free on whatever digital storefront you own the original release on. Digital Foundry has exclusive footage on this version on YouTube here, just prepare for some possible spoilers.

Whether you approach this game as Solid Snake or Rambo, you'll likely have a good time with Exodus but I would suggest to play the prior games first. 2033 & Last Light are still great games and will help expand the story, Exodus presumes you know and keeps moving forward with its own narrative for better or worse. I recommend getting the Gold Edition of Exodus if you can, I enjoyed both DLCs for different reasons and you find my review of the Season Pass below. Metro Exodus takes the series in a new and exciting direction with positive results so it's pretty clear that it gets a thumbs up.
