Evil Possession is a horror game where you play as a priest trying to perform an exorcism.

Story:

You play as a Priest. A family has moved into a house and start noticing things are incredibly wrong and the daughter has been possessed. You arrive and your goal is to complete an exorcism and save the family home.

The story of the game is not that great to be honest. The whole premise is you're playing as a priest who was asked to come to the family home to expel the spirits, but every item you need for the ritual you somehow forgot to bring, it's actually quite funny. Apart from that the game is actually more focused on gameplay and scares.

Graphics:

For an indie game is actually looks pretty nice. The rooms are dimly lit and are only illuminated by your lamp or the the candles and lights from the mansion. The main enemy of the game however looks pretty stupid, it's supposed to be scary, but her walking towards you every so often just made me laugh because of her crazy walk.

The environments themselves look nice, but there is a problem when you're hunting for items in the cabinets. They start to look pretty much the same, I wish there was more variety in the rooms, so I can tell what I looked through and what I didn't.

Audio:

The audio design is pretty decent. The music is creepy, but it's light on the ears and the other sound effects like the crackling of your EMF device and the heart beat of your character speeding up when the girl appears deliver quite the atmosphere.

Gameplay:

The gameplay in the game is a mixed bag for me. One thing I really liked is how cool the concept of performing an exorcism is in game form. The game is mostly a Slender The 8 Pages clone. You run around the house looking for whatever item you need in that moment. One moment it's run around and look for candles and then run around and set up ritual sites.

While you're doing that, you are constantly chased by the possessed daughter and she is insanely annoying. You can't fight her all you can do is run away. She is pretty easy to avoid, on the normal difficulty she never even managed to get me, but dealing with her is a pain. Every so often she will appear out of nowhere and chase you, until she will give up and reappear a bit later.

She is slow and easy to avoid, but there are a few problems that you will face when she appears. A lot of the rooms are dead ends, so once you go in one of those rooms, there will be no way out and she will get you, so you need to be fully ready to run away once that EMF device goes haywire. Another is she might teleport right in front of you and there might not be enough time to react and she will kill you.

Another big issue is the key hunt near the end of the game. You need to find three keys to unlock a door and you must search everywhere to find them. Since there's a lot of places to look, it becomes insanely tedious to look for them, not to mention the daughter will be much more active in this section. Also not to mention the game doesn't mark where you've looked as the drawers and cabinets will close as soon as you're done looking for them.

Verdict:

Another of the situations where I wish Valve gave a neutral option. This game is not bad, but it's not great either and at one point the game actually cost money and if that was still the case, I would have likely given it a negative review, but since then it went free to play so I think it's actually worth playing through it at least once. The game is pretty easy and will only last you roughly an hour and I think it's fine for a fun quick pick up and play.

Final Rating:
6/10

Pros:
+ Great atmosphere
+ Interesting concept

Cons:
- The chases get annoying at the end
- Boring story
- That key hunt segment sucks
