First off this game is gorgeous. Hats off to the art team for the incredible portraits, backgrounds, and maps. Easily up there with Transistor, Braid, etc.

The UI is a little bunky but nothing you can't see past. Someone else mentioned that selecting characters is a chore and I fully agree. If you go into any menu you're going to fiddle around for a bit to do things you could in one step in other games. The mini menu to use character abilities and gives commands is fine though, and that's what you're going to be doing for most of the game.

It can be a little hard to get into the gameplay at first. Most of the mechanics are thrown at you right in the beginning and the game does not make it clear at all whether you should be aggressive or "fortify" your holdings. You'll soon realize the way to play is aggressive as possible without losing your characters when the enemy forces gain LOTS of reinforcements with no warning. Besides unannounced enemy fortification my only gripe is the sheer RNG possibility of every encounter. The enemy can do anywhere from almost nothing to almost double one of your character's health in battle. They're basically forcing save scumming unless you're a true masochist. It even conviniently autosaves before every encounter a la Fire Emblem for you to give the dice another roll!

Ignoring these small issues you've got an art and gameplay gem on your hands. This game combines one more turn, perma-death, and absolutely beautiful scenery. I highly reccomend it!
