TL;DR
Positive
  • Somewhat enhanced graphics (in some cases)
  • Improved gameplay (especially in the first one)
  • Convenient (All three games, with all the DLCs)
Negative
  • EA App is a crime against humanity!
  • 110 Gb, for some reason you must install all 3 games
  • Achievements were broken for 2 years! (evidently it's finally patched)
  • Some bugs are still present from the original
  • No multiplayer!
Buy it with a discount, especially if you haven't played it before (Or you want it all on steam)

Now here comes the long rant

It's always difficult to write a review of a remastered game, because it begs the question, what am I exactly critiquing here?

The Mass Effect trilogy is one of the best sci-fi RPGs of all time, made by BioWare in their absolute golden age. Having played the original probably 4 times over the years, I can tell you, this is definitely the game, you wish you could forget, so you could experience it all over again.

Having said all that, I have not once wished for a remaster during those playthroughs, mainly because of the extremely talented and dedicated modding community. With a bit of patience, you could actually modify the games both graphically and gameplay wise to be up to date. Hell you can even change the ending to one that is not the absolute garbage abomination that we got in the first release.

So to be honest, I wasn't so sure, why this remaster was needed, other than to found the studio after their catastrophic Anthem release. Sure, the first game was dated, even with mods, but I would say it added to it's charm.

When this was released, it made absolutely no sense to buy it. Other than the first game, the original trilogy didn't need any graphical enhancement. Pair it with the bugs, the lack of mods and the expensive price, the lack of multiplayer, and with the broken achievements, due to the absolute s**tshow that's EA app, it just wasn't a good deal for someone who already played the originals. And I most certainly i would not have recommended it.

Now, after 2 years, I would say things are changed a bit. The modding community did catch up, and not only that, but the release has bought some new life to it. With that, most bugs, and annoyances are fixed (by the community...) and you can enjoy all the graphical, gameplay and story enhancing mods from the originals. After 2 years, they fixed the not so small issue, with the achievements, so you don't have to jump hoops with the now retired origin app method.

All in all, I would say, if you haven't played the original, or maybe started the first one, but were put off for some reason, it's now a great time to experience it. Buy it with a reasonable discount.
