What was shall be

Stellaris is one of those mainly single-player games that you have to constantly relearn because it changes so frequently. When I started playing in version 1.0, almost 10 years ago, the game was completely different from today, even if we exclude the DLCs. And now that we are nearing version 4.0, we will have huge changes again. Though these changes are not always good (in my opinion), the developers are really listening to the community, which is especially noticeable in the quality-of-life improvements.

Overall, the gameplay is really great (and addictive). You have to pay attention to a lot of things constantly, so unlike other strategy games, there isn’t much downtime. Fleets, planets, diplomacy, politics, events, armies, exploration, space buildings—just to name a few. Maybe one of the coolest things is the creation of your own empire. You can design it from scratch or use an existing one and modify it. It is really fun... but let's be honest, everyone will play the Imperium of Mankind at one point. There are no two playthroughs that are the same since the map is always randomly generated, including the empires, their placements, events, leviathans, etc.

The game has a lot of hidden Easter eggs and small storylines, played through events, which can have cool outcomes. You just have to read them and not skip everything.

Visually, the game looks stunning. Everything feels kind of cinematic, including the space battles, but you won’t see much of it since you’ll spend most of your time in the galaxy map mode.

The soundtrack is also fantastic, but at the same time, this is a great game to binge-watch that show on your second monitor or just listen to podcasts.

My biggest issue with the game is the DLCs. Almost every new content addition is locked behind a pricey DLC. If you’re an older player who has been collecting them, like Pokémon, for years, then it’s just another payment. But for a new player? Well, it is extremely expensive.

In tl;dr Stellaris is a really great, constantly evolving, but expensive game. On of the greatest strategy games of all times.
