Disclaimer: I am only halfway into the game and have not explored aspects of the game apart from story mode.

A fun game that marries cooking and hunting into a delightful package!

First off, the good stuff:

Needless to say, the art for the food and ingredients are absolutely appetizing.

The character artwork is simple but expertly done. The characters have an abundant number of poses and expressions. The characters' personalities reflect well in how they carry themselves in both the artwork and the dialogue; it's been fun learning more about the characters in those regards!

I was a bit iffy about the gameplay at the beginning... but after playing for a while, it makes sense! You add and mix the elements in the platform as you would add and mix ingredients in a cooking pot. The mechanics are well-integrated into the story as well with regards to "carefully preparing" the dishes.

So far I really don't have much to complain about:

Personally, the time limit for duels are a bit too short for me to amply prepare. I would say it's enough to keep things challenging for me, but it might push some more anxious and less experienced players away. Maybe adding an easier mode where time limits are a lot more forgiving and hunts are less punishing would be good.

I echo another review's sentiment about cooking loadouts. It makes more sense to me to be able to prepare your tools after knowing the stipulations of the challenge. There's a bit of frustration in knowing that you have the perfect tool for this particular challenge that you just missed the opportunity to use. If there were some context clues prior to the duels that can tip the players in on which loadout might be optimal, I think this could turn into a fun little guessing game of sorts.

Some other suggestions:

Let me preface this by saying that I love going into the Practice Kitchen. Casually hunting (or practicing hunting) for the ingredients and cooking at my own pace, turning the dish into a delicious monstrosity for the history books... that's a very relaxing thing for me.

If it hasn't been done already, I would love the opportunity to be able utilize a mode like the Practice Kitchen and be able to choose the hunting location as well. And to add to that, a journal of sorts where you can record your best culinary creations I think would be a very cool feature.

TL;DR

If you're a cooking game fan, if you're a hunting game fan... heck, if you're a cooking game and hunting game fan, and if you like beautiful 2d visuals to boot, Battle Chef Brigade is right up your alley!
