tl;dr: buy ftl

I originally said that FTL is a great game that lacks polish and that breaks my heart with horribly unfair RNG every time i go for a cheeky run. But with the latest updates i've changed my opinion! The game is great, has lots of depth and different fun and interesting elements, and it's potential shines through with minimal RNG bogus - which has lead me to discover a new main complaint: Games of FTL last way too long.
My advice: Download CheatEngine and bind hotkeys for speedhacking FTL (Find process -> Enable speedhack -> Edit hotkeys.) Once FTL has been sped up, you can get a session played in 30 minutes, which is an ideal length for a roguelike of this type. Once this is done, FTL is an excellent game, one i'm close to calling a masterpiece.

PS. i unlocked the crystal cruiser after a day and a half of trying so you can all call me SIR gamer from now on B)
