[cut much out due to Steam character limits]

Love Esquire is a visual novel dating sim at its core, but it really mixes up bits of a lot of various other genres into one game. I find the recipe here has added a lot of good qualities in each area to make a very enjoyable and interesting final product. Add in the insane amount of voice acting involved, and the excellent level of writing, and you end up with something that’s been put together very well so far!

The basic premise behind the game is: grab, loot and/or earn gold in your battle experiences to buy items or train those skills to “git gud!”, make progress as you improve to improve your survival chances, and all chat up the ladies along the way. It’s time-based as you move around various places in town, so you have to sort of plan how you want to do things as you get used to the flow of the game. As you build skills, certain women you can associate with have an affinity for particular skills, and you get bonus affection points added in for having higher levels of skills in those particular attributes.

As you progress through the weeks, it can become a bit tedious and grindy at times for me, but the overall heart and core nature is fairly fun, and there’s a lot of dialog you can tap into, or skip. The way the achievements are done, it makes one want to rush through after several full completions.

Unfortunately there is a lack of balance in the harder and easier modes. You can exhaust all spoken dialog, or run through it without much back and forth, depending on difficulty and skills gained.

Another very minor issue is some parts of the story do not align with the dialog. Again, it’s just some very basic smaller conflicts I stumbled upon once or twice that were more or less coincidental. I found events would sometimes happen on the main story, but then my character would be surprised later by some commentary that was possibly intended to be read/heard earlier, if that makes sense. Not a big deal, but it could be organized better at certain points. In contrast, some content related to calendar events would also change the way a person spoke to you, recalling those events based on your choices, which was a nice touch.

Anyway, I’d like to go in-depth more, but I’d better get to some things I liked and did not like in a slightly more concise manner, so here’s my small list of pros and cons:

Pros

The story is done well for each character in the game. It’s well thought out, and I liked the small details, the feeling, and the overall nature of how it was crafted. There’s a lot of stuff to delve into, and it’s full of references and a lot of amusing comedy! I’m sure I didn’t even pick up on a lot of it, but it’s very crafty and witty! At times over-the-top, but still welcome all the same.

Lots of nice voice acting! One of the best things about the game, aside from the volume balancing issues I encountered. I played it in english, so I will only comment on that perspective. Lots of text, and about 90% or more is voiced. It is high quality voice as well - I really like the direction they took the characters, as well as the nice array of talented voices they’ve picked up for each one.

The variety of splitting up the time management, the visual novel-esque nature, the RPG level up and looting system, the concept of being the support guy for your knight, and how it was all put together the way it’s done is quite admirable. I love the refreshing hybrid nature of this game!

It’s got a lot of content, and it takes a while to get through. I decided to at least try story progression and completion with each character you can choose from, and then fishing for some achievements, but it is a bit tedious towards the end. Regardless, even just playing through once, you’ll put in at least a few hours in though, which I consider a good thing. Plenty of replayability, however.

The art is done well also. The CGs move a tiny bit, which adds more depth to the already spectacular renditions. It’s very tasteful, to say the least. They look great!

The game has a lot of soundtrack changes as things are happening, which is also nice. It fits the mood and setting well overall.

The price of the game is pretty reasonable for all the content, voicing, and development. It feels like they worked hard to make a really well put together game!

Cons

It could use a bit more balance with certain main story aspects compared to things you can talk about in individual conversations. Some story elements are out of place at times, but it’s just a few minor things one would hardly notice.

The difficulty is a bit strange too. Very easy to train on easier mode, and also easy to miss a lot of possible chat text, since affection points flow in too much. On harder mode, very dependent on your skill bonus, as well as your amount of gifting.

The volume of the voice acting was not balanced at all! In many parts it was way too loud, or too soft.

Certain achievements are a bit vague and hard to figure out a few for me.

It may feel grindy to some people after a certain point or certain amounts of playthroughs. You cannot easily skip around unless you make appropriate saves, and even then you have to go through each and every day after that, which is a bit of a chore. Another reason I may not go after the rest of the achievements.

For anybody who’s mainly looking for something lewd, the only H scenes are towards the end of the story arcs and the final completion of your game run via a community mod, so it isn’t ideal for this kind of ambition, unless you don’t mind putting some hours in with a quality game along the way. That being said, there is ecchi-related content fairly often during your playthroughs, so if one isn’t looking for major skin akin to something more “hardcore”, so to speak, this game has a lot to offer on the lighter side. You’ll get some good panty shots, but no actual revealed nipples. Some innuendo and talk of a sexual nature, along with some seductive pictures as mentioned. Mod that changes very end scenes, but it’s only at the endings, as mentioned above.

Conclusion

This is a great game! I am highly impressed with the quality of the material here, and I consider the overall price fairly decent for the amount of content and material involved. It’s got some interesting concepts, some pretty neat stories, and the humor’s everywhere. Tons of great references, good voice acting, and a pretty smooth and good flow to it overall. I’d love to hear the voices get touch-ups and balancing, so they stay consistent.

While I wish it had more of a heavier lewdness factor overall, it’s still a great game to play! Given the country of origin of development, I can understand it just isn’t possible with legality issues in Philippines. It’s definitely not your average ecchi or hentai game, as it has a lot of really good gameplay to accompany it. It isn’t just pornography with a disguising wrapper of words or puzzles to solve. It's a pretty damn good game at its core, and I’m happy I decided to play this! I highly recommend people give this a go - I think you might even enjoy it as much as I have so far!
