Originally released in 2001, Sonic Adventure 2 was a platformer for the Dreamcast which was highly ambitious and acclaimed at the time for its large scale, fast gameplay and deep Chao Garden system. But how does the PC port scale up?

Upon booting up Sonic Adventure 2 you are greeted with a pre-launch configuration screen. Thankfully this menu has plenty of options including monitor selection, many supported resolutions (up to 4K) and controller/keyboard remapping.

The game itself runs in widescreen at a solid 60fps with no issues. Some of the cutscenes are 4:3 due to the onscreen visual effect overlay videos. The game itself is about Sonic the Hedgehog and his black/red rival Shadow, and each side (Hero/Dark) has their own unique playable campaign. The main gameplay revolves around running through stages as fast as possible with Sonic and Shadow. These are the most fun, but there are two other gameplay styles: finding Master Emerald shards as Knuckles/Rouge and shooting robots in a mech with Tails/Eggman. The Chao raising system is also a significant part of the game, and is a great way to take a break from all the action.

While the main character is Sonic, the central character is undoubtedly the amnesiac Shadow the Hedgehog. He is identified by his black hair and distinctive red streak.

Created by an intelligent doctor and the game’s main villain, Shadow was born from alien DNA with the intent to be the ultimate lifeform. Realising the evil that was intended to be done with Shadow, the scientist behind him (who was ordered to be killed shortly after) took Shadow to try and use him to defeat the alien menace.

Unfortunately, it was not until the big bad is up in full swing and the world is screwed that anyone found any of this out, including Shadow realizing the artificiality of his life.
Shadow owns a bike, and is often accompanied by an alien who assists him in battle.

He has an intense rivalry with the blue blur Sonic, who likes to keep the world in order… but, there’s more to them than just looking like each other.

Sonic Adventure 2's story culminates with the heroes and villains fighting in deep space over the ultimate weapon, a satellite with the power to obliterate Earth.

After Shadow transforms into his golden super form in order to defeat his villainous creator and save the planet, he is sent hurtling back to Earth, and almost dies.

Overall, Sonic Adventure 2 is a unique experience unlike any other. I highly recommend picking it up if you are a fan of Sonic or like intense action games!
