After 1000 hours over the course of 5 years of this game, I feel it may be time for a review.

I have seen TF2 go through some changes over the past 5 years, and while MyM may have split the community, I think one large issue is the players themselves. If someone is new to the game, they get treated like a 5 year old, and pushed around due to having little knowledge of the game. If we, instead, told them what they could do to improve, for instance, tell them to try training, or to request a coach, not "our f2p was dragging down the team"
That's killing this game.
Obviously, not at a rate fast enough for us to notice, but it's the people that hate on the f2ps that complain about this being a dead game, but we can save it if we accept new players, make them feel welcome, and make them want to invite their friends to play, and their friends, and their friends. (plus, as a little bonus, if you help new people, you get a pretty nice cosmetic)

So remember this, if nothing else, when the pyro update comes, help the new players that get interested in it, help your friends to get interested in it, don't push people away.
