I'm...

completely new to Magic: Arena is the easiest way to start playing Magic. Find a beginner's guide online. Arena's and MTG's youtube channels have some tutorials. There is a tutorial and a codex in the game to help you. As for gamemodes I recommend Starter Deck Duel and Jump-In.

a Standard/Pioneer player: Standard is the main format of Arena and there are competitive events with big prizes regularly. Arena doesn't have Pioneer yet but it has Pioneer-lite that will eventually be Pioneer. For now there are still a few decks missing, but it's mostly there.

a Modern/Legacy player: Arena has the Historic format that resembles Modern of 7-8 years ago, powerlevel wise. There is elfball, a better delver, jund midrange with goyf, multiple combo decks, lurrus and even snapcaster. Historic also has digital-only cards that are very controversial.

a Commander player: Arena has Brawl with Standard cards and Historic Brawl with every card on Arena available. Sadly both are 1v1, so no multiplayer yet. Brawl modes also has matchmaking based on your commander's power. So if you want to fool around with squirrel tribal you won't be matched against the best of the field.

a Limited player: Arena is the cheapest way to play limited. There is bestof1, bestof3 and bot draft queues for every new set. They rerun old sets every once in a while. Also we get cube events regularly with different power levels. You can't build your own cube in-client but you can do it through 3rd party programs.

PSA to new players:

Look up mtg arena codes for free packs.

The store isn't selling single cards, items you see are card cosmetics. You still need to own the actual card to use them.

You can reroll 500 gold quests once a day. Aim for 750 gold quests. You can only store up to 3 quests.

Daily rewards are front-loaded. Aim for 3-4 wins a day and 15 wins each week. No need to push yourself for more and turn enjoyment into a grind. Btw, this loop is enough to fully complete mastery pass, and the pass is worth it.

You can mute emotes by right clicking on opponent's avatar.

If you lost an event, where you paid an entry free, because of a disconnection or a crash you can contact support and they will refund you.

XCOM, but you are not bombarded with 182 countdown timers. You can do ♥♥♥♥ on your own pace.

XCOM, but you don't have to cycle 400 stupidly normal average human soldiers with terrible mental faculties.

XCOM, but research and production don't take 50 days.

XCOM, but there is also a whole pokemon game in it with over 50 beasts.

XCOM, but your pet robots are actually useful.

XCOM, but actually focuses on the fun part.

Early Access Review
I think the strong point of this game is that archetypes are more clear compared to Underlord or TFT. It's ideal if you want a less hardcore experience.
