This is a very good Bethesda RPG in the mold of Skyrim or Fallout 4. Many of the systems present in those games can be found in Starfield with refinement and expansion. The space game is new for Bethesda and the combat plays surprisingly well. Some may be disappointed that a lot of the travel is simplified with cutscenes. After years playing Elite and Star Citizen, I found it to be refreshing actually.

The background is rich and pretty diverse. Clearly they have spent a lot of time developing the lore. Quests are quests, meaning you will kill things and find things and deliver things, but these are usually wrapped in interesting stories. As usual with these type of games the "side" quests ending up being engrossing experiences that can take you hours off the beaten path.

The ship and outpost building deserves a mention here as these are two pretty complex systems that seem to be underplayed so far in the coverage - especially outpost building which can expand into somewhat of a supply chain network of resource producing outposts feeding into automated factories. Some pretty cool stuff that I imagine modders will be able to build upon.

If you've liked Bethesda's previous games you'll most likely enjoy this. If you are looking for something to replace Elite Dangerous or Star Citizen, this is probably not what you're looking for since most of the focus is on story and RPG elements.
