The vanilla game is legend. It's the undisputed King of FPS with no contest. Games with more to them have of course come out since DOOM's release in the 90s but no matter how awesome some of those titles are they will never be DOOM. It's like Elvis in a way. Elvis may not be your favorite but he's the king and you should just deal with that. Also like Elvis DOOM will always still hold up. There's something classic about it that willl never age. It has that DOOM feel and that's really the only way it can be described. If you've never played before I urge you to at least try it. Try freedoom if you don't want to spend any cash but try DOOM in some capacity at some point in your life.

Then there's the mod scene. DOOM is to shooters what Skyrim is to RPGs. They both are THE game to get in their genres if modding is something you're looking for. Except for the fact that DOOM has been around for 20 years longer and has wayyyyy more mods than any other game in existence, including Bethesda's aforementioned cash cow. You could play a new DOOM map or mod every day for the rest of your life and still not see all of them. You could only play the high rated content on DOOMWORLD and modDB and it would probably take you a lifetime as well.

TL;DR
This is a top ten game in practically every list ever created by anyone and it's only 5$. Yet for some reason you're reading this review instead of clicking the buy button.
