I've already read both previous works of Zerocreation Games studio and even made a fan Russian translation patch for one of them (Zanghua/Lay a Beauty to Rest, to be precise). Both of those works were very interesting and rather well crafted, but still there were some flaws here and there, such as some repetitive moments in Zanghua, or questionable game design choices in Er Fen Zhi Yi.

However, this time, even if I can't say that this game is 100% perfect, it's a pretty solid step forward. The story is very well written, it's engaging, touching, intriguing and sometimes rather unpredictable. It has some very dark and uncanny, even outright nightmarish moments, but at the same time some very heartwarming ones. The characters are very lively and memorable, even some minor ones. The theme of prevailing hunger and how valuable and ought to be cherished food is can be sensed very deeply.

The voice over is overall pretty good (hearing different Chinese dialects was very interesting), however, there are some minor flaws, like, for example, Cui'er and Man Sui's little brother sometimes didn't sound like little kids (especially the latter). Fortunately, it wasn't very frequent. The soundtrack, unfortunately, kinda lacks diversity, but still does pretty good job at setting up the mood. And the ending song is great.

Regarding some controversial themes, I'd like to give my respect to the developers for not giving in to the censorship, not trying to smooth over the edges, etc. If it's 17th century, then it should be reproduced as such, and not through some kind of modern lens. I'd especially like to point this to some reviewers here.

I'd also like to give a small advice to the devs for the future: you should make a small in-game encyclopedia, especially in a game like this. Because a lot of non-Chinese people don't even know what Ming dynasty is, much less would they be able to recognize there real historical figures like Li Zicheng or real historical events like Wanggongchang Explosion. So a set of small explanations for every such moment would be very appreciated.

Such price for a more than 10 years old game is kinda ridiculous. I like this VN, but will definitely wait for a sale to buy it one more time.

The game has a peculiar narrative style, its story is rather intriguing, and it has some good written characters (although not all of them are written equally good, to be honest). I also have to give credit to the setting, the idea of "everyone has their own truth", gray morality, etc. is executed rather well there. A pity that the gameplay (SRPG) part is mostly there just for the sake of it, it doesn't affect the story in any way, and on top of that doesn't present any significant challenge even during the so-called "challenging" battles. Still, it's not that bad either and may serve as some kind of a break from reading the VN parts.
I hope that the future sequel will take into account all the controversial aspects of the original game and make it all better and more enjoyable.

Давно уже я не испытывал такого чувства, когда прямо прилипаешь к экрану и будто оказываешься внутри главного героя, вместе с ним переживая, радуясь или ужасаясь от происходящего. И эта игра более чем способна подарить такое чувство. Особенно учитывая то, как выстроено повествование всей трилогии: в Extra все по большей части тихо-мирно, в Unlimited экшена тоже не то, чтобы много - но именно благодаря этому ты потом, проходя Alternative, вспоминаешь это все с ностальгией. И очень сильно привязываешься к основным персонажам.

Еще очень понравилось введение в повествование главной антагонистической силы. До определенного момента они существуют лишь в рассказах отдельных персонажей, схематичных изображениях или последствиях их деятельности. Можно даже начать слегка сомневаться - а есть ли они вообще на самом деле? Благодаря чему их резкое появление становится действительно шоком. И сам образ их, на первый взгляд слегка стереотипный, тем не менее, постепенно обретает довольно жуткие, чуть ли не "лавкрафтианские" черты.

Тем не менее, есть у новеллы и огрехи, мимо которых я не могу пройти. Они, безусловно, не так уж критичны для общего впечатления - однако оставляют некоторое чувство досады. Насколько я успел увидеть, много у кого вызвала возмущение излишне слащавая концовка. Но моя главная претензия - это то, что она слишком обрезанная и нераскрытая. Как и линии многих персонажей, которые просто исчезают вникуда. Лично мне особенно обидно за Ёрои-сана - очень харизматичный мужик, я был практически уверен, что он должен будет появиться еще раз - но нет (точнее, появился ближе к концу на один-единственный кадр - ну что это такое?) :( Ну и еще у меня была надежда, что выбор девушки окажет более существенное влияние, чем то, что мы просто прочитаем ее письмо нам в конце - но это уже так, мелочи. Но, как я уже сказал, несмотря на все это, трилогия Muv Luv все равно остается отличным и интересным произведением, с которым определенно стоит ознакомиться.

Well, now that they fixed the situation with language pack I'm changing this review to a positive one. The game so far is running OK, although with some occasional stuttering. Still, it's nice to have the classical MGS games on Steam, that's for sure.

While the first part, "Non-Existent Summer", is pretty good, but not enough to be awed by it, this one is truly a masterpiece that can be put on a par with the internationally acknowledged Japan-made visual novels. For me personally, it gave off vibes similar to the titles from Science Adventure series, such as Chaos;Child or Steins;Gate. The story is very rich and complicated, enough to make one's brain ache, and some of the twists are outright genius. Besides the story itself, there are a lot of interesting thoughts on the modern life and society. Also, both the prequel and this part contain a big encyclopedia on Chinese net culture and memes.

The only problems that I've encountered are some bugs, i.e. some voice lines confused between each other or even outright missing, and also a rather repetitive soundtrack. In short, not a big deal.
But, of course, there is another great issue: the novel is entirely in Chinese and doesn't have any translation, even a scheduled one. And the language here is not that easy at all, with the aforementioned memes, slang, wordplay, etc. Still, I hope sooner or later the devs will start to work on it, since such masterpiece not available to those who can't speak Chinese is really a waste.

This is one of those cases when the DLC can be considered even better than the original game. The story is psychologically deeper and also reveals some secrets and adds some interesting nuances to the main plot. Also, Yan Yueqiu is a great character, very easy to sympathize with.
Together with the main game, this makes a very good and really engaging story worth reading for everyone. Still hoping for the English translation to be released as soon as possible, so that all VN lovers could enjoy it!

It's a real pity that this masterpiece is still left untranslated after almost a year since its release - because I'm positive once this VN reaches a broader audience, it will get its rightful place among the top tier novels of all times!

'Cause it has everything it needs for that:

- well-developed and charismatic characters
- a detailed and interesting world
- a very convoluted and intriguing story
- a good sense of humor

The steampunk, "end of 19 century"-like setting with a few anachronistic elements added for fun (like idols or cosplay, for example) is definitely not something that you happen upon often in the visual novels :D And the Cantonese voiceover adds even more to the unique atmosphere and style of the game.

I would recommend to buy it even if you don't speak Chinese at all - when the translation gets released, you won't regret it!

At first, I did not have high hopes for this work, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good the plot turned out to be. It's an interesting, deep, and convoluted story. Perhaps, some characters may seem a bit underdeveloped, but I think it's mainly due to the relatively short length of the novel. The music is superb, a pleasant mix of modern and traditional Chinese tunes. The Chinese voiceover is also great.
I really do hope that one day the multi-language version will be released, so that the people who don't know Chinese could enjoy this work as well!

После божественной "арки вопросов" я немного переживал - вдруг "арка ответов" окажется не настолько крута. Ведь в тех же "Цикадах", при всем уважении, последние главы "Ответов" местами проседали по повествованию и были менее интригующими по сравнению с предыдущими (ну и слишком слащавый, как по мне, хэппи-энд не особенно впечатлял).

К счастью, мои опасения оказались совершенно напрасными. "Ответы" оказались нисколько не уступающими "Вопросам" - скорее, в чем-то даже их превосходящими.

Градус безумия тут не спадает - скорее, наоборот, возрастает; уже знакомые персонажи становятся еще более многогранными (некоторые даже слишком, лол), новые же очень органично вплетаются в происходящее, добавляя ему красок. Подобно "Вопросам", "Ответы" постоянно способны удивить читателя - ты никогда не знаешь, что может произойти в следующую секунду, а про некоторые сцены, будь они показаны в отрыве от контекста, можно было бы подумать, что это вообще из какого-то совершенно левого произведения и уж точно не могут относиться к "Чайкам" - но нет, могут еще как :D

Отдельное спасибо "Ответам" за внесение геймплейного разнообразия в последней главе - в "Цикадах" подобное также присутствовало, но тут этого еще больше и круче.

В целом могу подытожить, что "Чайки" - поистине гениальное произведение, в котором, мне кажется, есть вообще все, что только можно пожелать. То, что "дитя человека" было способно написать настолько масштабное (длиннее всей саги о Гарри Поттере!) и глубокое произведение - самое настоящее чудо, заявляю об этом с абсолютной уверенностью! (с) Жаль, что красным тут нельзя выделить(

Ну а про то, что саундтрек "Чаек" - это саундтрек тысячелетия, я уже говорил в обзоре к "Вопросам" и здесь об этом тоже скажу. Опять же, жаль, что это красным никак не выделить(
