I’ve been watching this game for a few years now. I had very high expectations when I saw it was released. TL,DR: I think it’s a very good game, and could be a great game with a few updates.

It is very fun to zoom around each level. Some of the bonus coins are easier to find, but I’m almost 3 hours in and have not been able to find them all yet. I also haven’t even touched time trial mode.

Each area comes with a set of unique tools and mechanics that keep the gameplay fresh and interesting. Some have felt these were tacked on, but I think there’s been a ton of thought put into the execution of each one.

The grappling feels strange at first, until I realized it works differently than in other games like Flinthook and Grapple Dog. And that’s ok. It’s supposed to work differently. It works well for the kind of traversal mechanics that are in Peppergrinder.

I knew this is subjective, but I vibe with the aesthetic of this game. I think the art style is just enough, not too flashy, so when things like fire breathing enemies show up, it really pops. Again, I can see the level of care that’s gone into making all the sprites and art for this game.

Sound effects and music are good. Again, they fit this game very well. If we get more in updates, great. If not, totally fine too.

I want to talk about game length for a moment. I can’t remember the last game I’ve finished completely. I think we have a culture in gaming that is very focused on collecting achievements, and 100% completing things. Some of these games can take over 100 hours to fully complete.

For what this game is trying to be, I think the pacing is very good. It’s “achievable” in a way I think is very important. I’ll get into my thoughts on level editing in a moment, but if / when that day comes, the game could have almost unlimited replayability for me.

Some things that could be considered for future updates: There are a few QOL tweaks like being able to skip the boss intros. I wanted more story building than the intro to the game had. I’d also want more and varied things to unlock.

Finally, the biggest thing I think that would take this game into greatness and give it real staying power is a level builder / editor, and/or an official modding API. The inclusion of the sticker sheets is great, and shows some of the same toolset that a level editor might have.

A level editor is a massive feature, not something easily tacked on. It would be much better to let that feature evolve over time, like it did with games like Rainworld and Celeste.

I would give this game a solid 8.75/10, which is great for a launch title like this. Highly recommended, but do a little research first and get to know the game you’re about to drill into. It’s more than worth, if you want what this game is serving up.
