Delete these as you try them...try the safe mode again - i did it wrong.

You will need to launch the game from that shortcut too.

I'd also delete that folder in "My Documents" and luanch the game first. Kill it. Then do below. To get a new Video.scr file.

So..safe mode...I was doing it wrong...this guy is on to something.

-----------------------------------------------
This problem seems to be related to video resolution settings.

The game seems to like to change the settings without notice or something. I found that running the game in safe mode fixes the issue... then you can change the settings to your screen's resolution.

Change the shortcut to something like

"C:\games\Dead Island\DeadIslandGame.exe" -safemode

Works every time for me without needing to delete or reinstall or anything like that.

also same thread...

Basically right click desktop shortcut to Dead Island, change the target to something like:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\dead island\DeadIslandGame.exe" -safemode

Not sure if you sometimes run 2 monitors. But maybe check it isn't "ghost" seeing it.

EDIT: IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING A BLACK SCREEN (ie not crashing, just black screen) YOU CAN FIX IT BY 1 OF 2 METHODS.

Best method: go to your steam folder and common, right click dead island go to compatibility and disable desktop composition.
This disables win 7 areo theme which is known to usually only prevent print screen from working in games (ie it gives you a black box the size of your games resolution)

Other method: unplug your second monitor.

From a website:
Here are some Youtube clips with people playing using integrated Intel graphics:

Go to http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect using Internet Explorer (it works poorly with other browser in my experience) and make sure all your Intel drivers are up to date.
