actually began my personal struggle to master the big choric structure. Every interruption of the block for-

rebellion sounded like a single scream: the desperate demand for the return of the dead. With the bodies
piled upon one another and wincing in pain like wounded beasts, the female chorus changed into a huge
hill of suffering above which the vision of the dead men began to dawn. Formed like an organ, pipelike,
towering side by side and above one another, they appeared in the ghostly pale light of the background, and
lifted slowly, incredibly slowly, the right arm in a single gesture of defense and denial."
