The ♥♥♥♥ climbing in this game is honestly enough to ruin the entire thing. Forced climbing. Boss 'fights' where you can't actually do any damage. Very strange direction to take this game considering they had feedback from the first one...

This game still has the worst hit reg I've ever seen. Guns don't shoot where you aim, they shoot to the centre of your screen no matter where the crosshairs are. Even knowing that there are still times where you will miss a shot that obviously hit (think shooting someone in the back while they are standing still). It's just wild to me that the biggest part of an FPS game can be handled so poorly.

The game is STILL absolutely plagued with cheaters, with no kill cam to differentiate between some random game bug (which this game is filled with) or someone genuinely cheating. They recently did a cleanup of the leaderboards and about 50% of the names were banned. Do you honestly think these people stopped playing when this game is F2P?

Nightmare and harder difficulties are locked behind hero level 70. You can beat all insane maps by level 45. This is fine if you're okay with grinding a game for no gear upgrades for 35 levels, but in general is a TERRIBLE idea. Just because you made the game and couldn't beat nightmare before level 70 does not mean that the people who play your game are as bad at it as you. Even if I am unable to beat nightmare at that level DOES NOT give you the right to stop me from trying. I paid money for the game, I should play how I want.

I'm sure there is a lot of things I have yet to experience, and I know this game can be grindy (I played the original on ps3 for 2k+ hours), but telling me I have to spend 5 hours with 0 chance of an item upgrade is a dumb idea no matter how you look at it. I want to like this game, and I will likely push past this just to see what the end game is like, but the rule that difficulty should NEVER be locked behind a level applies to every game I've ever played. This is no exception. Blocking someone from moving on for an arbitrary reason is Anthem (on release day) level of poor game design.

Update:

I have put an additional 30 hours into the game since writing my last review. I beat the final map on NM difficulty (hardcore) with my highest character being 73. I then learned that massacre difficulty is locked behind character level 83 which, like DD1, is a significantly longer grind than levels before 70. I'd say about 24 hours after beating summit I am at level 77 (after learning to keep a single character permanent in my deck simply to level up).

There are two main things I have learned in my playtime since my last review:
1. This game puts emphasis on survival only. After beating each map once you will have no reason to ever go back. The armour that drops is useless compared to survival (which makes sense), there is only one pet that drops from campaign missions (which boosts your towers so it's designed to be used in survival), and there are no map-exclusive weapons until late game (which are useless anyway due to point 2).
2. DPS characters are useless. With a dedicated dps character on NM in gear farmed from high wave survival runs you will still only be hitting around 400k dps. Fighting a boss that has 34m health would take you 20 minutes assuming you don't die.
The meta strat is to stack DSTs where you will be fighting the boss and watch it get melted without doing anything yourself.

This game might as well be pure strategy only. The only difference between you being there and not is that you can be there to boost your DSTs and might get attacked by a ninja and die. If even the boss fights are best fought with towers then why am I there in the first place?
