I feel bad leaving a negative review. I think these games are culturally significant, but rarely fun or interesting.

Yu Suzuki sought realism in his games, and unfortunately that includes a lot of tedium. The first game has you work a full week as a forklift operator for some reason. Ryo is hunting his father's killer and tracking down a criminal gang, but he has to put in an 8-hour shift first.

The second game has a more compelling narrative than the first, plus more varied locations. However, the second area of the game has an unbelievable amount of stair climbing and elevator riding. The last section of the game has you wander around in the woods FOREVER.

Only play this if you feel the need to experience this ambitious experiment for yourself, as I did. Consult a guide if you don't want to spend hours awkwardly fishing for clues from poorly-dubbed NPCs.

I loved Shenmue 1 when it was released, Shenmue 2 was a disappointment for me (at least I was able to play it on DC being based in Europe).I think these games are near impossible for newbies to enjoy tbh. They have their place in history but I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

that's the impression i get so far. culturally significant and paved the way for better games no doubt, but a poorly aged gameplay experience today
