This used to be my favorite game, now I barely play. It's disheartening to see how Valve has treated this game throughout the years. The community is keeping this game on life support-- creating servers, hosting events, etc. While not "dead", it has undoubtedly fallen due to the bot crisis. I, among many others, are done being patient.
Each Valve matchmaking sever is ridden with bots. The game is unplayable. It's heartbreaking as I've made so many wonderful memories over the years. I truly feel sorry for those who discovered this game amidst the bot crisis, who have never experienced a casual match with zero hackers, spammers, and aim bots. I've played when Catbots on 2Fort were just starting to appear, when LM4OBOX was the main third-party program for hosting.
I look at the timeline, and the attention that Valve has given this beloved game, and I just don't want to play anymore. It's discouraging. I assume it's only a matter of time until the Team Fortress 2 Twitter (X) account makes a single post again, promising everything but delivering nothing. Or we won't get anything.
What a tragic end to such a great game.
