A fresh and inventive take on the survival genre.

More simple to grasp than other types of games, Subnautica is a breath of fresh air for anybody looking to find a new style of game to play. The (Mostly) underwater setting is genius and brings a new way to play, build and fear everything lurking in the depths.

A creative world with unique, beautiful and terrifying creatures and locations. The game thrives on it's sense of mystery and exploration. The games' world however, is prebuilt, and because it has a story that ends leaves the player feeling more satisfied than other games. However, this does mean that once the game ends, there's no going back to the world without loading a save file or starting over.

A fleshed out customisation option for your vehicles and bases is great, and works well at giving a more unique feeling for each player. I remember exploring the early game in my black and yellow Submarine (Named Mr. Bees), and after a few horrific encounters with the more dangerous wildlife, had a much larger vehicle to dive deeper named F***ThisS***.

The end game however tends to suffer, due to locations that while still beautiful, can be irritating and hard to navigate. And if you are ill-prepared on deeper explorations and lose your vehicle you spent hours gathering the materials to build, it can ruin the entire experience. Also a few bugs here and there had me going through the game without an important (though thankfully, optional) items.

That said, Subnautica is a brilliant, fresh style of game that will go down in history as one of those early access titles that just plain nailed it. 8/10.
