Katamari Damacy REROLL is a remake of the original game on PS2 that started the craze as we know it. I did not read any news articles or anything pertaining to this game. I did not even read the Steam store page. So I didn't even know about the remake aspect. I thought it may be a new game instead. So imagine my surprise to see the same introductory video as the original game, and to hear the sounds so familiar to me. Fortunately I was not disappointed, even though the game plays like an exact port over from the PS2 version, with updated graphics and some minor modifications. The gameplay is exactly the same, and the levels so far are the same as well. This was the original game and one of my favorite games ever, so I don't mind paying for the same game again.

I do wish the price weren't so high, because the original game was only $20, and the remake here is $30 on Steam. Since the game is so short, it would have been good to keep it at the original price so that more people can get drawn into this wonderful world that a lot of us have lived in for the past decade and a half.

I have played a bit shy of 3 hours on Steam so far and of course this is a short game if you only plan to play through the game and beat each level once. Most of the levels are timed, so that limits the total game to beat, especially when there are not so many levels. But this game is worthwhile in so many ways, in the gameplay, in the music, in the replay value, and the sheer fun that is this game.

For whatever reason this game launches in a 720p window, and I have no idea why. You can adjust the settings only after you get past the tutorial. The game looks wonderful at 4K (even though I think it's just FHD stretched). It may not be the current day 4K gaming standards, but knowing exactly what the original looked like, I am gawking at the small detail improvements and being plain giddy.

If you have played the original game, you will notice shortly after starting that the biggest difference seems to be when you are rolling your Katamari into a space that is blocked off from view. The original would require you to turn around one way or another or roll back out before you can see. This version gives you a small circular window that allows you to peek at your prince and Katamari no matter what kind of dead space you have rolled into.

Gameplay
Control your rolling sticky Katamari, a ball in front of your prince protagonist, and roll up all kinds of items as long as they are of the appropriate size or smaller. Grow your Katamari this way until you can pick up bigger and better things. Each level has an objective and you just carry on until you meet the objective. Most levels have time limits, so if you do not succeed within the time frame, you will have to try again.

Controls
I strongly recommend a controller to play this game. Keyboard controls are available, though I didn't test it out. I hear it's not very good compared to controller.

Graphics
Fantastically improved graphics from the original PS2 version,

Music
This is one of the highlights of this game, in my personal opinion. It's one of those video game soundtracks that I have listened to for years, and never gotten sick of it. Please keep in mind that the small amount of story narration is done in Japanese without English, and most of the dialogue is one-sided and not acted vocally. These points stay true to the original game.

Audience
Young, old, casual, serious gamer alike would all enjoy this game, I think.

Pricing
Unfortunately the base price is set a bit too high, especially given that this is a remake. I am not complaining about the amount of content, even though the game is fairly short, because this game is trying to stay true to the original game. The reason I didn't buy this game on Day 1 from Steam was due to the price, instead I got it from an authorized third-party seller because it was a discount to about the price I paid for the original way back in the day.

Positives
+Wonderful fun
+Casual yet can be still challenging, depends on the way you wish to play
+Super easy to learn with very intuitive controls, though I recommend that you use a controller
+Soundtrack is a major highlight and I have listened to it for years and will continue to do so for years to come
+Significantly improved graphics from the original, so at least it's not a 1:1 port, which would have been disappointing
+Gameplay stays true to the original, why change something that's already so good?
+I finally have some really cool 4K screenshots of the introductory video! (I think it's just stretched FHD, but I am happy with the smoother lines.)

Negatives
-The set price is my biggest beef with this game at the moment
-The "Start" screen seems to tell you to press start to begin, but you need to press it twice, or hit your "A" button twice on the controller
-The game starts at 720 windowed without ability to change until after the tutorial. I was seriously worried I was going to have to play in that small windowed view for the rest of the game.

Conclusion and Other Thoughts
Katamari Damacy REROLL is the remake that so many of us have been waiting for to come out on PC. This is one of the few games why I still own an original PS2, and thd disc sits in the optical drive pretty much all of the time, without fail. I am slowly playing through this game and savoring every bit of it. Except for the minor flaw of needing to play through the tutorial in 720p windowed mode and the price that I think is set too high, I think this game is perfect. Yes I know it's a short game, but it stays true to the original, so if you are looking to play through the game only once and you have a strict time to money ratio for games you buy, you won't exactly get that here in this game. I know for a fact that I plan to play and replay this game many times over, so it's definitely worth it to me. It's so casual and fun that I can use it to help me relax at the end of a busy work day, while also enjoying some super nice tunes to go with it. I am only part of the way through the game right now because I am savoring it slowly. I also hope to enjoy this game for many more years to come.

You are welcome! :-) I do hope the sequels come out on Steam as well. This is by far the shortest Katamari game, being the first. The Steam version doesn't add gameplay from the original game, so from your perspective of wanting to get the most out of your money, it might be good to wait. Though I do not regret buying it shortly after release at all. It's been a blast.

Thanks for making this review. When i found out this was on steam i freaked- Katamari is one of my top 3 franchises ever and ive been beggin' for a release on steam for awhile. but as someone who REALLY values money to time ratios on games, and this game also being out of my safty line of $20 makes this... something i have to wait for.

You are welcome! You may be thinking of We Love Katamari, the second game on PS2, that game was longer than this one and had 2-player coop. It was messy but fun. Hopefully they do a remake of that game for Steam/PC and other systems as well!

So there is no co-op. I played a katamari game a long time ago, it had co-op, maybe it wasn't this. Thank you for your time!

@Previatto, I just tried it with 2 player mode. You can go into the in-game settings and enable second player controls, I reconfigured the keyboard a little for first player. You get a 3 minute battle in side-by-side split-screen view, with both of you on the same map, looking to get the biggest katamari in that time.

You unlock more cousins as you play more, here's the character selection screen/mushroom:

Here's a screenshot of the battle screen as you start:

@Previatto, I believe it has a second player option. I only have one controller and didn't check it out, but I will do that later and let you know. On the road today, so it may be tomorrow before I try.
Previatto 24 dec 2018 om 8:21
Does it let 2 people play together?

So yeah, a lot better. Anything over 20 always makes me think twice or thrice before buying, so I understand your dilemma. Perhaps it will get into a good sale/bundle one of these days.
