Dark Souls is one of those games that tries to avoid the norms of the industry, and successfully does it. An incredible hard game for the newcomers, that makes you think before engaging, doing the same thing over and over again doesn't give you a different result, if you're dying a lot it's your fault. It's a game that takes time to learn how to play it, you explore and explore, try different weapons and sorceries and find your play style, and then you need to learn how to best use it against different types of foes.
An incredible experience, and one of my favourite games ever.
