Don't buy until they fix their servers. Currently unable to play the game. Great game though!

Early Review: Loved the first For the King game, but the sequel is a mess. The other reviews claiming they have fixed the bugs are wrong, there are still a lot of game ending bugs. Getting a multiplayer game to start/load/run is a matter of frustration. But we can forgive the buggy launch as they are taking steps to fix it & we're shell-shocked gamers jaded by the industry already.

TLDR: This game would be funner if we didn't have the first one to compare it to. They've changed enough to make the game feel fresh, but they haven't improved it enough to renew the sense of adventure. It feels like less of a indie work of passion and more of a soulless sequel launched too early.

Pros:
  • -I like the 4x2 grid. Ability to move and cover up low health members is great, but hard to execute.

  • -The classes/items have subtle differences to make them feel new again.

  • -UI has improved. Looting provides helpful hints like how many consumables characters already has & which character has the highest related stat for an item.

  • -More diversity in weapons and the derived stats from the start.

Cons:
  • -Uglier characters. They've put more effort into their low poly characters, yet made character creation feel more restrictive. I would prefer an option to pick both gender & body type.
  • ->ex. Blacksmith characters are comically large masculine bodies with either Male or Female heads.

  • -There is less gender neutral apparel. On my second play through, I found myself stuffing my male scholar into common hag dresses to stack intelligence bonuses. His cleavage showing was worth the +1 after all, right?

  • -Feels harder than the first game. Not that the first game was easy. Like other rouge-likes, this game will become easier with repetition & lucky random drops/loot.

  • ->The "Time is Running Out" mechanic is harsher than chaos & grants little agency. Though subsequent runs suggests the "clock" resets rather than diminishes as before.

  • ->Uneven fights feel more skewed due to larger group sizes. 4 v 1 fights even more trivial and ambushes vs. one isolated group member are deadlier.

  • ->More characters fighting, but less damage resulting in longer fights.

  • -Some tool tips are not helpful. Ex- Stunned is "Combat turn is Delayed" but it should be "Your Combat Turn will be Skipped"

Fun game! Best turn-based dungeon crawler looter on the market ATM. AND it has 6 player multiplayer... Amazing.
