I was one of the beta testers for this game when it first came out on Kartridge, so I’ve spent more time with the game than is shown here - probably a good 10h! In short, I think that it combines a powerful, thought-provoking story with gameplay that is challenging but rewarding. The music is one of the best parts as well, I still have some of the tunes in my head to this day 😊

What sets this game apart from other rhythm games is that there’s quite a focus on memorising and repeating melodies – instead of reacting to a song that’s already playing by pressing the right buttons, you’re a part of the song yourself! The atmosphere is beautiful and each song that you fully master feels incredibly meaningful since the characters that perform them are, figuratively and literally, very colourful.

The game deals strongly also with the main character's mental illness, but it's very well done and it’s clear this is drawn from the developer’s own personal experiences. His own story of making the game is quite inspirational as well.

One of the few flash game era classics that has stood the test of time, MARDEK RPG is a game I can wholeheartedly recommend. Sporting a great selection of diverse characters, a heart-felt, unique story, as well as one of the most satisfying turn-based combat systems I've yet experienced, the game allows for dozens of hours of fun. Hardcore fans will enjoy the higher-quality sound, and various granular improvements help to set this version apart from the free version online.

The story is a particular point of interest, playing with and subverting various RPG and Fantasy tropes while telling an engaging tale of its own. While the game's story remains uncompleted, curious players can purchase a cheap DLC giving them access to the creator's story notes.

The creator (at alorafane.com) is working on a rewritten world and story to this day, a testament to the quality of this precursor.
