For me Homeworld was always about the epic story. TL;DR of this is that this is not a Homeworld story.

Level design and gameplay are great going through the campaign. Sountrack is also strong. I still have to get into skirmishes and the rest of the game, but as I said the Homeworld series for me was about 2 great things. 1. Story and 2. space combat. For the second I still have to go through the rest of the game to really comment, but I do feel that we have gained as much as we have lost from previous titles. The big thing is the lost of modules which simplifies the research and building process, but I feel that was not really needed as it added another layer of strategy into the games.

Now for the story. There is a visual and storytelling departure from the previous titles. After the initial surprise and excitement that we are going to get much more and learn about additional characters and the inner workings of the mothership and the fleet came a great disappointment that none of that was not just realized, it turned into completely forgettable cringe story and the new visual style while having potential failed to deliver due to poor storytelling and I found happily sacrifice it for a better story.
Homeworld is a military sci-fi epic space opera story. This was nowhere near close to that. The interactions between the characters are general drama with the general and wrong military tropes from pop culture. The dialogue became increasingly cringe and overall felt very amateurish, definitely not something that a professional writer should produce. The changes in lore to hyperspace make this more of a fantasy than sci-fi. Though there was some initial great threat, after the first mission it was never returned to, so it turned into just a small story that did not generate the feeling of an epic and felt like a local skirmish without much impact on the galaxy (nothing even in the epilogue). Homeworld series was (as the title suggest) about fighting for the homeworld, which is obviously missing here and is mentioned maybe once or twice at best.

I could go on and on. Honestly it was very disappointing and the more I learn about I learn about it it looks like there has been external interference in the story and I would love to see what the original story was about, because this ain't it.

I'm not recommending this due to the poor story which for me was a main draw.
