Oh, also, it removes the alpha channel to black, and crops it to a square using the smaller direction as a baseline (ex. if it's more tall than it is wide, the top and bottom will be cropped off).

If it's too big in filesize, it shows the missing error for some awful reason. It automatically converts the avatar to JPG with a quality of about ~50, probably to save on server space, at a resolution of 184x184 pixels square.

Yeah, my intution is very weak minded. I'd rather be concrete and upfront. Still, I also kinda wish Steam would be a bit more upfront with how it processes pics for Avatars. It's kinda confusing the way it's set up.

No, my wonder is: Steam uses 184x184 jpg images for avatars. When you upload a PNG, it automatically converts it to JPG at very low quality (like 50 or so).
If I uploaded a JPG with quality 100/no optimize/no progressive, would it use that or downgrade it to a lower quality JPG?
If it doesn't then we could have picture-perfect, no-artifact avatar images...
I'm a bit of a perfectionist, if you haven't yet realised.

I'm new to photoshop/GIMP myself, so I would have absolutely no clue. All I know, and this was recent, is that PNG > JPEG in most situations.

Mostly the time was used making it transparent so I could add a little background so it wouldn't be so plain.
End result? Gradient background and ever so slightly higher quality, joy.
...I wonder though, if the background is already exported as a JPG, does it lower the exported quality...?
