Couldn't really tell you how similar / different they are man. This is my first time playing RoN and I haven't played AoE in forever. I'm still working my way through the tutorials but it's pretty fun so far. The major differences so far is that you can't build most things just anywhere, they need to be within a certain distance from your town centers and that your units take attrition damage when you enter enemy territory if you don't have a special unit build and accompanying them.

Dunno if Loadout is any good. Haven't played it yet.
